Fallout 3: Stupidity Discussion
« on: August 29, 2008, 06:08:11 pm »

There are five new gameplay videos out for fallout 3 similar to those scripted videos that came out before Oblivion on Gametrailers.  They do a great job of showing off how completely lacking Bethesda is in any respect for the series or even basic intelligence in game design... but whatever, watch them yourself if you like.

I'm curious whether these videos are actually real, or just scripted but made to look like real gameplay like with Oblivion.

Here's a link to the first one.

Bearing in mind I haven't looked at any of the stuff for F3, I don't really understand all the hostility about it.  I mean, it's not even out yet.  Playing devil's advocate with the criticisms I've heard for a moment...

*** ENGAGE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE MODE ***

Yes, how dare Bethesda play to their strengths?  Clearly they should be completely disregarding everything they do well- only by trying to improve on a dated but tried-and-true formula completly different to their previous works will they produce a worthwhile result.

Oh, but wait.  Of course it will suck... after all, the great thing about Fallout was it's combination of grit and zany humour.  Everyone knows Bethesda's games never contain humour or grit.

*** DEVIL'S ADVOCATE MODE DISENGAGED ***

I dunno.  Taking on someone else's series is never easy.  It's not going to be exactly the same, but it can produce a worthwhile product.  Look at Thief 3.  Surely the poor bastards deserve a chance?

Sorry but I personally lost more faith in Blizzard than Bethseda

Perhaps Bethesda do deserve a second chance after Oblivion, but (to quote the greatest ever video game reviewer) Bethesda are the patron saints of games that look good in preview sceenshot or trailers (the latter being an exception in this case) but ultimately handle like a sink of second-hand bogwater

Well, first off, what they do well is completely different from Fallout, which is why people thought they shouldn't have purchased the license in the first place and why I'm still befuddled as to why they did now that I see the game in action.  If they'd make 'Generic Post Apocalyptic Oblivinlike FPS' then it would have been just as successful with the hordes of Oblivion fans that don't know a thing about Fallout and couldn't care less, and it wouldn't have pissed off the Fallout fans.  The game is not a true Fallout game, there's no question about that.

Grit and humor are not the most important things about Fallout.  They're just two important things about it.  One of which is generic to all Post Apocalyptic worlds anyway.  Things that really made Fallout good were things like the called shots, (which are dumbed down in F3) The choices with consequences, (which Bethesda has never done, and the gameplay videos show that their abortive attempts at them are quite idiotic) and the multiple solutions to quests that were often non-violent, (which Bethesda has never done and still hasn't shown any examples of.), and the atmosphere as a whole, (Which has been totally canned.)  Finally, they've completely disregarded the lore of the gameworld to an extent equaling or even exceeding the massacre they did on Oblivion.  Also, the AI, animation, ability to rip the armor off any character and wear it yourself (even though now you can totally dismember characters) and voice actors are still the same terrible crap from Oblivion.

It's strange that you mention that they shouldn't try the tried and true method when in fact, by making the game Oblivion 2 they are doing just that.

Also, yes, Bethesda's recent games don't include grit or humor.  They contain senseless violence and stupidity.

Seriously, just watch the videos they make a much stronger arguement than I ever could.

There's an excuse for the butchered plot, but not a very good one... Fallout 3 takes place in an alternate universe, is basically it.

I would also like to know what the most important things for Fallout are.

Well I did just mention a bunch of things that I thought were important, none of which Bethesda got right.  What did you think of those?

Called shots: What's really missing are the crotch shots, and using it for combat completely.
Choices with consequences: Bethseda hasn't done well with this part, so I agree.
Multiple solutions to quests that were often non-violent: See above.
Raping of the plot: Blizzard has done much worse to their own series.

Been following F3 for a while now, makes me really sad. First they screw the elder scrolls, now fallout. What's next? x-com by bathesda?

Eh, I really don't care that much, but shouldn't you guys wait for it to come out before you decry it as the worst game in existance, and that it and its programming team should be burned, and that it is a stain on the fabric of reality?

I was like, ha, this looks like a pretty dumb and boring game. I was so wrong. Gentlemen, I have discovered true fun.

I love Morrowind, and Oblivion was somewhat fun out of the few hours I spent playing it...

But I think they're doing Fallout 3 wrong.

I don't think it can beat "Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing", since that's the best game ever made, but they seem to have ignored everything that was fun about fallout 1 and 2 and threw out a shooter that doesn't seem to be all that fun. I mean, I will play it, give it a spin, see how it goes, maybe even finish it before saying it sucks, but I'm almost sure I will say it sucks.

I don't think anyone reasonable will decry any of those things even after it's released.  Really, those are your words alone, they say more about you than anyone else.

Odd. I had the exact reversed emotions about elder scrolls 3/4.

I agree about Fallout 3 though. Bethseda has never done humor, grit, choices that matter, or levelling mechanics very well. At least, not consistantly or well. Levelling up your major skills is bad!? What kind of character system is that?!
