Modders. Will. Fix. Everything.

END OF DISCUSSION.

But seriously, this little debate is eating up the thread. I'd like to discuss the founding of my new church, the Church of Harold and Bob.

Because you'd need a hell of a long barrel to actually slow a bullet to a semi-safe velocity.  If a gun jams, it doesn't fire, nor will it again until repaired.  If it fires, it fires.

Once again, I understand the reasoning behind it, really I do.  However, no amount of reasoning changes the fact that what you see in the game is totally unrealistic, and ruins suspension of disbelief.

no, if i was talking about the barrel then the gun breaking wouldnt do anything. if the barrel gets cracked and causes it to become tighter in areas or something like that, or if one of the mechinisms breaks that will all slow down the bullet.

It's not a matter of realism, it's a matter of keeping RPG elements in-game.

I think it's just a sort of abstracted out "Because you aren't very skilled in using it you misgauged where exactly it is you were aiming and hit him in the arm instead."

Talking only about real time shots, of course.

Um, no, actually the sort of things you're describing probably aren't going to "slow the bullet"; they'll make the gun jam.

To bring this thread back onto its original topic: ZOMG, this mechanic is so lame! I mean, it was handled more realistically in way back in Fallout 0 for crying out loud, and that* came out 20 years ago!!!

Yeah, I don't know that much about guns, but I highly doubt there's any way to damage a gun in a way that would allow you to shoot someone in the head without killing them, without rendering the gun unable to fire.

The gun damage lowering the hit damage is stupid, I agree. There's no excuse to it. Really.

Any damage in the gun will:
Make it less precise
Make it jam
Make one or another component break, rendering it unusable
Make it go boom on your face

I can't remember which reputable news source I got this from, but it seems that that could happen. Some WWII veteran tried to do a murder/suicide thing with his wife, but the powder was so degraded in his pistol that the worst thing a bullet did was lodge in his ear.

Sorry. I haven't watched the two videos in the previous post, so I don't know if they refute that or not.

Anyway, slightly more on-topic: Zero Punctuation!
His verdict? It's pretty good. That's better than I can say for most games.

I'm pretty big on guns, and what I've been hearing here is a little strange. when a gun "Degrades" typically, the only thing that happens is the buildup of gunpowder residue and dust in all of the gun's parts. After a lot of repeated use, or just faulty hardware, a gun will jam. The gunshot residue can cause the gun also to jam, but never, ever, if you do in fact get a gun to fire, will it be able to break the surface of the skin.
Obviously, what the above poster says may and probably does happen, so, for the sake of fallout, let's just say all of the gunpowder has degraded to such a low level, all bullets only barely puncture the skin, and with these tiny pistols, the rounds may even barely bruise. So, we could say if you gun skill is higher, the better the chance that the ammo you find has a higher velocity., because you can sort through the bullets for the best.
There.
So can we get back to Fallout 3, please!

Ok, it is very simple and it has already been stated by Bethesda: they stopped making weapon "miss" because they clearly aren't, so they modified the damage according to skill. All shots are hitting, yeah, they are all grazes. It's a limitation of how they handle damage and hit/miss. Apparently a lot of people complained about Morrowind because they were clearly swinging at a person at point blank range with a huge sword and the person didn't have the animation of Neo from the matrix, dodging every swing, so it shouldn't miss (apparently some people are just too fucking stupid to know what a RPG is supposed to be like, hit chances and all). So people go into a 1st person RPG and expect it to behave like Doom.

Well there you go: they nerf damage so that you can hit every single time and don't whine to them about "missing" all the time. I guess people just can't be pleased.

'There is a lot of bad stuff to FO3, there is a lot of good stuff. I rambled on for about a full page on the eve-o forums about that, so I cba to do it again.

Let me sum it up: I'm a fan of the fallout series, and pretty much torn about fo3.
Its crap. very good looking crap. that got me immersed for days. and stole my sleep, too.

After all I REALLY REALLY enjoyed it.

BUT! In the final scene....

So... you like Fallout, and you like Fallout 3, but Fallout 3 is crap.

Got it.

The end is rubbish, but it's ok because Liberty Prime is beautiful. Victory.
