Quote from: Vince the awesome Indy god
Day 1 - Vault 101

Painful.

You start as a newborn and slowly move through different ages, FINALLY becoming a teenager. Your birthday is an especially painful "level". You play the role of a dumb 10 year old with an amazing repertoire of dialogue options.

Couldn't the Overseer help out more with your birthday? Who comes up with this shit? You can also harass every adult and either demand presents or complain about what they gave you. I guess Bethesda thought it's a good example of Fallout humor.

Anyway, after taking a painfully long GOAT exam, I'm awakened by the Overseer's daughter. I wonder what she wants.

My dad, the light of life, my moral compass and the only friend, is gone you say? Good for him. The girl informs me that the Overseer's thugs are looking for me (I guess they didn't think of looking in my room) and have already killed Jonas. Oh my... Poor Jonas. She gives me a gun - thanks, kid - and tells me how to escape the vault. Apparently everyone knows it but me. I expect troubles, so I equip a baseball bat (I'm too cheap to waste bullets at this point). Let's take a look at my stats:

Strength 5, Melee 15. In Fallout 1 that would mean a painful death. In Fallout 3 that means 94% chance to hit in VATS mode.

I run into two armed guards in combat gear. The guards manage to reduce my health from 200 to 141, but die easily. Then I kill more guards. Then I kill the overseer. Then I kill some more guards, leaving a dead vault behind. At lvl 1. Unskilled. Wearing nothing but my vault pajamas.

The Overseer's last seconds.

I killed the entire vault and I'm a Vault Guardian! I wish my dad could see me now.

Yes, I had to url the whole fucker, the thing needs publicity.

If they renamed it to "Oblivion 2: No more Fucked up Elder Scrolls Sequels" it would make this game taste a bit better.

Fallout 3 share my feelings towards Oblivion (or half of morrowind). They're fairly decent games when you don't take their inspiration games in account.

It also shows me once again how reviewers are screwed up people. They gotta make things about games most of the time. Find non-existent problems and praise ugly crap.

Oh well, back to playing. It makes me want to play daggerfall tho.

So far Fallout 3 is pretty rad.   I enjoy it, and think it does a fairly good job of staying in-universe.

Hm....so the game has been released? I might buy it, if it's really good. [Even if it's not like the old FO games... ::)]
The IGN review was quite impressive, I must say..

Burk... the dialogue in this game really turns me off. Man, the writers...

Then again, most game based writing, heck, most writing in general these days when aimed at a mainstream audience (Hollywood, music, etc.) are worse than crap. Not a particularly exclusive thing I guess.

There are three things which compel me to play games over any other criteria:
1. Gameplay
2. Voiceacting, music and soundeffects (if it exists)
3. Writing

Fallout 3 kinda works on the first one but miserably fails on 2) and 3). Sort of the same as Oblivion. Guess they aren't my games.

edit: Actually, that's not correct. The presence of a giant orbital cannon or some superlaser of some sort supercedes all criteria and flaws.

Now I can understand using the oblivion physics engine. Alright, it is a physics engine. No problem. It is the fact that they have the same voice actors that ticks me off. And they even use the same style, too! It's Oblivion in the future!

Now I have never played the original Fallout games so I don't know what people expect from it, but here are the highlights of what I saw:

 -Huh, cave texture seems familiar...
-Change your face right before the grate exiting the tutorial area? Gee, where have I seen THAT before?
-Alright, slightly better landscape. Although it is all brown. Shape and texture is nice, just bring some green! Jeez...
 -Huh, robot...
-Nice city, although the townsfolk seem kinda familiar...
-Wait a minute, I remember that quest giver! He was the Dark Brotherhood quest giver!
-Amusing that you don't want to mess with a nuke, but I don't see how a few extra points helps. Eh...
-Alright, comba-wait a second, this all seems familiar...
 -WAUGH! TITAN FIST!
 -WAUGH RAILROAD GUN!
-Huh, with all this limb severing, this would be ideal for Dw-
-NO! NONONONO! DF SHALL NEVER BE COMBINED WITH THIS!!
-Hold on, I recognize the voice of that doorman...
-You know, I know this guy is trying to sound annoyed, but he is just too damn nice!
-Huh, relatively nice place... Actual color...
-For a nuke, that was unimpressive. Why can't we get nukes that take several minutes to finish? That make you blind temporarily from seeing it directly? And by temporary, for game balance, I mean half a day.

And that was just from the intro videos.

As you journey to the center of the world, feel free to read the death announcements of those dwarves that suffer your neglect.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the cosmos. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

And we completely and totally annihilated plants? I'm sure there would be a lot more left over depending upon how long ago the nuking happened. And there are plenty of small plants resistant to radiation.

At least I think so. Still, there could be different shades of rock other than brown. DF has taught us that.

This game seems pretty awesome to me so far, but then again I wasn't one of those people who've been preparing to hate Fallout 3 since day 1. Fuck, even NMA which hosts some of the loudest and craziest haters has some people who like Fallout 3 (I wonder if they've been banned yet?)
