Cages have to be made of metal. Place a bunch of cages in a room, then from one of those cages create a room. Then hit [j] to designate it for use by the (in)justice system. To confirm you've done it right, check on the justice tab on the stocks menu. Those cages should show up.

You don't have to use cages; you can also use metal chains.

But the key part is using metal of some kind.

It also works with chains and ropes.

Now that answering his question is out of the way, how does everyone design their jails?
I generally do:

Code: [Select]
Where . = floor, X = wall, $ = chain, d = door, B = bars
.XXXX
.B..X
.B.$X
.d..X
.XXXX

And no, I use pig tail rope and it works fine.

Ah, I thought the chains had to be metal as well. No matter how much you play DF you'll never know everything, huh?  :D

But whats a dingy prison cell without piles of iron chains? Pig tail chains just aren't the same, they gotta be iron.

As for the design of my prisons, I tend to use several rooms, each with a bunch of cages in them.

I find that it helps to put the cages near the water supply, as this means the other dwarves waste less time helping to keep the prisoners alive. having a bucket stockpile there can help too. and naturally, you want the water to be reasonably near the food anyway. prison, in an efficient dwarf fort, is a way to prevent random deaths because you didnt have a specific rare metal for the noble demands.

I usually design mine like this:
Code: [Select]
╬══0.0══╬══0
║§.┼.┼.§║§.┼
╩══0.0══╩══0
............
............
╦══0.0══╦══0
All the walls and floors are engraved, except for the hallway floors.

I stopped using jails when I realized nobles were worthless sycophants who should be starved to death in their locked bedrooms. I killed a baroness, a baron consort, and a tax collector this way today. I'm keeping the dungeon master and hammerer because they look kinda cool. dont jail people just cause the nobles demand it, what did they ever do to deserve that kind of power?

Plus, dwarfs can commit crimes not related to nobles.

Gee, and here I thought I was running the country. In any case, it seems to run even more efficiently when they aren't around demanding that I make crappy trinkets out of materials I can't acquire.

While this is true, there really isn't anyone around to get upset about those crimes going unpunished when the nobles are gone. I guess my Hammerer probably gets a little pissy about it but he knows he's on thin ice as it is, given that I just executed his immediate superiors via slow starvation.

You aren't the country. Perhaps a county or a barony, but the country involves all fortresses. Plus, killing nobles is the easy way out. Be a man...er Dwarf.
