[40c] Farming Bug: Const. + Mt. Building
« on: August 28, 2008, 12:26:27 am »

Did a small search and found nothing recent. The only answer I could see is if you can only plant certain things based on the soil? Or perhaps you can only plant cave-plants on soil that you dug out regardless of whether the soil is inside or outside.

*After further inspection (Not Positive; so you may want to check) I think the Cave-Plots may be under squares of the second floor that I had to dig out of the mountain to keep the shape of the house; but it would have made it a strange shape, so I dunno.*

Basically, it seems this area of dirt is partially considered inside, and the other is outside (even though it is covered with floors connected to walls (basic building)). So when I make my farm plot (4x3), and set it to Plump Helmets, my farmer will only plant them in the top left corner (Im assuming its where they start when beginning a cycle). I guess since the adjacent spaces are for some reason considered outside (they will only plant berries) that he stops after that 1 plot square. I have him set to only farming so hes not doing any other tasks (I also have multiple farmers). It was when I decided to make 1sq-Plots that I realized some will only plant outdoor plants and others will only plant indoor plants. My fortress nearly died because of it so I consider it a somewhat serious bug. Thank god the elves had berries for me to buy =/. They shall pay dearly for not selling me any meat.

Im not sure if I can recreate the bug... not even sure if I understand the circumstances, but here goes. I currently have a fort build outside (all separate buildings and such) with some built into the mountain. I have several 2 story buildings. One of which is my farm. If I remember correct, I dug into the mountain a little bit, channeled above that same area, and built walls around that entire area. The second floor barely dug out at all, just channeled and built over. The ground floor is all dirt, the 2nd floor and walls are all made of wood (including door and objects inside). *Basically I have a wooden 2-story building (with a ceiling of floors) that is partially build into the mountain*

I was hoping to find some reason why the berries can only be planted where they are. There is a ceiling above them mind you. But here is the EXACT layout of them...
Couldnt find buttom to equally space =/
(used table so I turned it into a spoiler incase they load slow? preview took like 30sec)
L= Loam Wall
D= Dirt (Ground)
^= Up Stair (Wood)
F= Wood Floor
W= Wood Wall
D= Door (Wooden)
P= Plump Helmets (Indoor planting only)
B= Berries (Outdoor planting only)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It dosnt matter what you put above your farm plot if there is no dirt or stone layer directly above a square it is considered Light. Being inside has no effect on what the farm can grow only the light partical which is only blocked by dirt/stone squares.

This is known as the greenhouse system for dwarf fortress and lets you grow outside plants from the safety of a covered overplot inside your fortress.

The only other thing I can think of that could cause the problem (it was hard to indeitfy the actual problem) is that some plants are restricted to good/evil biomes and you could be on a border between bioms on your map.

I think the greenhouse thing might be it. Just thought it was kind of a bad bug since he was only plotting that 1sq.
