Read the Rules

Make a character

Two step process. Make sure you don't pick a race with level adjustment or extra HD, as that will mess with your ECL.

If I have to quote MYSELF to answer people's questions one more time...

Now that I've thought a bit about it, I'll probably go with a human beguiler. No fancy nonstandard race crap. Perhaps a keen +1 light crossbow(8335 gp), a +1 shortsword(2310 gp) and a mithral shirt(1100 gp). Totaling 11745 gp, leaving me with 1255 gp to spend as I see fit if my calculations are correct.

I'll focus mostly on the roguish side of the beguiler, but I'll still use magic. But we've already got a few magic users, so I'm support at best.

What do you think?

Ranged weapons can't be keen, I don't think. Look in the DMG.

They need to be piercing or slashing, I think. A crossbow does piercing damage(or at least, it's ammunition does).

I think.

It's either keen or seeking then.

I do not want to read those rules. I tried to create a Talking Cat character with that character generator, but I don't know what I'm doing. Honestly, I don't know if I want to play, either.

D&D doesn't really work hard to accommodate characters that differ from the PHb races by any large margin.

On the Keen thing: The DMG has a table each for Melee and Ranged weapon special abilities. Keen is not on the latter, most likely as the weapon being keen doesn't make sense, as it does nothing but blunt damage on its own. (Much like a huntsdwarf with his crossbow training up his hammer skill). The Keen would apply to projectiles, which is also what the Keen Edge spell says. At least, that's what I'd rule.

... Anyway, yeah, I dunno how late it is for me to drop in and add my two cents, but I'm a fairly new DM who's been running some friends through various hackneyed adventures via IRC and, more recently, Maptool. It's kind of like OpenRPG, only in my opinion, better. I dunno who's gonna be doing the DM, but they might be interested in checking it out. And also speaking of handling such things on-line, there are a number of nifty sites (Mythweavers being my personal favorite) for handling character sheets. They can be modified by multiple people (consensually of course), the obvious choices being the relevant player and the DM. Naturally, that may not be preferable for one reason or another, but the option is there. It also occurred to me at some point during typing that, the format may be more of a Play by Post / e-mail thing, which is an equally viable set-up.

Either way, if whoever winds up doing the DMing wants a crash course (or inept explanation, as the case may be) on Maptool, I'd be happy to offer one. Again, I dunno how you're planning to do it via MSN, but I found it to be an unbelievable headache when I was using IRC to run games. I'd offer my services as DM in general, but I'm new, only have access to the core books, and have a campaign I need to be channeling my primary creative energies to.

As a matter of fact, me stumbling across this thread was the result of a train of thought beginning "Hrm, I remember a DF DnD game, wonder if there's one of those going on so I can play the game for once." So, needless to say, I'd be quite happy to step in, in the unhappy event that somebody drops out. I've added Shadow_archmagi via Meebo, with the rather-hastily created login of knightofeonia@gmail.com, and I'll try to keep up with this thread.

Well, it looks like a stand off for DMing between us to then  ;)
Since you have a campaign going already I think I ought to be DM but I'd like it if you were on hand for help as you have D&D experience, where as I just have Knowledge on being a DM from other RPGs.

I'm also happy to occasionally go

"Erm.. excuse me? Mr. DM? You know that monster will kill us all, right? You have something planned, right? Because that monster, the numbers lie. It says CR 6 so it should be fair but the truth is it is more like CR 8, unless we have a sundering fighter with great cleave which we DO NOT."

Nerd-points for whoever knows what monster I'm talking about.

I'd say the much lauded rust monster, but I hope you realize that a party is supposed to be able to take on something up to 4 CRs above their level.

Being on-hand to help coach/consult and perhaps even run games is something I could handle, but I'd rather stand back from the creative/planning aspects, assuming we aren't just going to wing it all.

Also, tell that to the guys who got trashed by a group of three of CR... 4, I think, Lizardman Warriors who wouldn't stop rolling 18s and turning my player's rogue into a pincushion with either javelins or spears. The (four) players were L6 at that point, and that's what, an EL of 7 or 8?. Fickle, fickle dice. (There was also a Lizardman cleric, but all he did was roll 1s on every touch attack he made or fail concentration rolls, so I don't think he counts.)

That also reminds me of the first battle I ever ran.

Me: "There's a pile of junk in the middle of the room, which is about 10x10 with brick walls. Dusty cobwebs hang from the ceiling; the place hasn't seen much use in recent years."
Rogue: I shove the ranger forward.
Ranger: I stab the cobwebs!
Me: ... You sure?
Ranger: Uh, maybe not...
Rogue: DOOO EEEET!
Ranger: No, I'm going to set it on f-
Rogue: I STAB THE COBWEBS!
Me: You sure?
Rogue: YES!
Me: ::rolls:: Something falls on the rogue's head. The ranger and the cleric both see that it's a large spider.
Rogue: What!? What!? Get it off!
[insert several extremely low rolls where the spider somehow manages to get knocked off but not take any damage]
Me: The spider skitters onto the rogues boot, and... ::roll:: fails to bite him.
Rogue: I kick it into the air!
Me: The spider flies high into the air, and falls back down taking ::rolls:: 5 falling damage. You win the fucking fight already.

We've since come to call a string of unfortunate rolls 'spider's curse'. I kid you not when I say it took three characters five rounds to kill a small monstrous spider. And even then, that was me bullshitting. I should also remark that the spider never managed to hit anybody either.
