OK, lists:

DM: Me (KoE)

Players:
Devath, Fighter
Sir Edmund, Ranger
Boksi, Beguiler - a cross between the expert and arcane spellcaster archetypes
I will add more here when you give me your class

@ Poltifar: I like the idea, but wouldn't it be easier to just run several completely unrelated games?

Well, actually, yeah, much easier. But i thought we'd want to try to make a truly epic DF world with crazy people killing each other like mad...
...
Nah, too much work. we're better off just making seperate games

There are good ways to make easily reproducible rolls. Go to random.org, open the Integer Generator, advanced mode, enter an alphanumeric seed (has to be consistent across turns - for example being "Playername DnD turnnumber") and get your number that can later be checked by anyone who wishes to.

For example, you can try "Sean DnD Turn0" with 10 numbers of 1 to 20 to get these: 5 18 16 4 2 14 15 3 18 8

Man, I always wanted to give D&D a try...

Mind if I jump in? If so, can you post all important links in one post? Saves searching the whole thread.

Any advice for a brand new D&D player?

wow, didnt know random.org had an id for random integer generation... cool. although it takes out some of the 'charm' of actually rolling the dice the old-fashion way.

Also, i have always wanted to play DnD too... can we get a list of DMs that are searching for players, so that we can create more than one group and accomodate everyone around (each group on a seperate world if thats what you want)

EDIT: Also, if possible, could we do it not on MSN but simply on a play by post? i dont have MSN and i dont intend to give my email address to the site mentioned above. if you really need an IM, use IRC. ne email needed :)

Well, you either roll dice the old-fashioned way, or get reproducible rolls, there're no other options.

yeah, i guess the choise on how to do the dicerolls is ultimately the Dm's choice.

So, Kashyyk, how many players are you going to take? if you are playing D&D, the optimal number would be around 4, but i guess you could have more.

also, if anyone wants the rules and has a fast connection and uses torrents, i've been downloading a HUGE amount of DnD 3 and 3.5 rules, variations, etc... a total of MORE THAN 3 GIGAS worth of pdfs! includes (but not limited to) the basic manuals, Monster manuals 2 and 3, fiend folio (if i remember correctly), players handbook 2, the whole Encyclopedia Arcana series, alot of books for new items, alot of other misc stuff including rules for fortress building/war/empires... if this interests you, say so and i'll post the link to the torrent.

Just point me to a new players guide, or something...

I'm willing to have about 5 players with me, as 4 seems a bit small personally.
If you want to roll dice with out having dice use the Dice Bag. Down the centre are the dice d4, d6, d10, d20 and d100. on the left of these are how many of these you roll and on the right is the modifier. Try it.

That is essentially the player's handbook. It's big, yes, but stick with the core rules and a bit of reading should put you in a spot where you think you understand the basic tenets of the game.

Well I guess there aren't as many players as I thought. Is there going to be a game using something other then play-by-post? If so I think I'll sign up for that one. Not sure on my class yet but I think it will be a psionic class.

sorry Zako, i got a bit carried away... :P good god, i just checked how many pdfs of D&D books i have, and i all can say is that i'm surprised Interpoll still hasnt arrested me for illegally downloading thousands of dollars worth of pirated books :P

hmm, i just checked something someone posted earlier in this thread, and i think it would be very useful if we did play. check maptool at http://doku.rptools.net/doku.php

also, Kashyyk, if you are playing by play-by-post, i'll join you. what level do we start at? what system do we use to allocate stats? and how much starting money do we get, the default for our level or a specific amount you give us?

We're playing over MSN. Or at least my group is; I think we may have to start up at least one or two more.

I have an MSN plugin where I type /roll 1d20+5 or /roll 6d7+2 and it generates a random number.

Its really easy, and no way to tamper with it.

sadly, i doubt i could be on as the same time as all the other players, even if i had MSN... so i think that rules that out for me... so is anyone setting up a group that would play-by-post?

I don't really care - MSN or play by post is fine. However, I'm in Newfoundland, GMT -3:30, so timezones may or may not be a problem there. What if we made groups by timezones?
