PRE-release
« on: June 22, 2003, 11:59:00 pm »

Don't expect much or anything.  Most of the changes are internal...  anyway, you can mess around with the new magic stuff, and see if you have leaves or not.

ONLY HERE:
The PRE-release of Wholesome Fun, version 0.04.00

If you save and reload, the grass changes.  I've figured it out, but it is a real headache to fix.  If you press G, and look at the description of the ground or air, you can get some new information.  M is the hotkey for magic (the little help screen has been updated).  Some of the new interface screens are useless (social, quests, abilities).

Let me know if/how the new text works.  At this point, the display bug probably isn't fixed, but you never know.

Projectiles don't land on the ground yet, and when you drop something it flies into the air...

It's fun to play a shadow demon and watch the sunrise in real-time.  Face east and press comma until just before the sun shows up.

Hmmm...  if you can think of anything you really need to be in this version, let me know.  Otherwise I'll put a cap on it and start up items/clothing.

Impressive!

The good news:
This RPG is really starting to look serious   :),not that it didnt look promising before but...blowing up rabbits is real fun   :)
I tested both versions on W98 and 2000 BTW.
So as far as the bug was concerned it didnt seem like it has something do to with the OS.

The not so good new:
Magic is working...mostly
But in case I use the "Heat Part (Fist of Melting) I seem to have a problem.
It takes quite a while before anything happens (and sometimes the game crashes right there) and if something happens then the computer shows me 3 windows before the game proceeds, after that the game proceeds normal.
So the spell is working but seems to be prone to crash the game and always shows me the following messages in 3 windows (I have to press a button to proceed).

No1
Spell Template
Heat Part

No2
0

No3
10000

The windows look like typical..well...windows windows   :D

If have not yet started messing around with the spell editor but that will change soon...  :D
Im pretty sure that this bug will be ironed out soon.

As I said, don't expect much out of the spell editor for now...  it isn't very versatile yet.

Those windows must be debug windows I left in there by accident.  I'll post a fix when I get home from work.  What that is saying is that the part is being heated by 10000 1/10 deg K.  He he he...  because the melting point of tissues is (high) at 1200 deg K, you have to cast the spell a few times to get something to melt off.  Or you can go into the Spells editor and just increase the number and save it.

Not sure about the crash.  I'll mess around with it tonight.

I guess if the leaf bug wasn't the OS, it was a screwy implementation of OpenGL floating around.  One is not zero, dammit.

The link up there now leads to a version without the message boxes.  I couldn't get it to crash.  Has anybody noticed anything specific about when the crash happens?  Anything else?

I think I'm just going to wrap it up and call this the Wholesome Fun release.  Healing rabbits is wholesome fun, anyway.  I'll fix bugs as they are reported (especially the text bug -- what does it look like now?) for a while, as usual.

Next is the item/missile weapon/clothing/etc. release.  I don't know how long that will take.  In light of how long the magic release took, I might do a pre-release about halfway through, if things start dragging along.  Maybe I should just break it up into a few versions.

I don't know why it is happening.  I tried one thing, and it didn't work apparently.  I'll try some other things for the next file I put up in a few days.  It's hard to fix bugs that don't happen on my computer.

Which resolution and how many bits of color are you running at?  (right click on the desktop and click the settings tab, it should be there)

If you grab the version I just put up, and go into the file in the init folder, there should be an option at the bottom called "old_text".  Set it to "true".  Then you'll have the code from before.  Of course, there will be a bit of a lag (nothing you aren't used to) which is the reason I switched to the new text in the first place.  No one else is having the problem and the code is no different from my other stuff...  could it be drivers or something weird like that?  Anyway, if the old text works, it doesn't matter much.

Let me know if the old text displays when you change the old_text flag to true.  Also, when you see the new faces, let me know if they look human or if they are garbled (if they don't display right, it suggests an overall texture storage problem).

Now the "Fist of Melting" works without crashing and showing windows.   :)

However the magic does no longer seem to capable to attack organs (liver) in creatures.
I can still target them, but then nothing happens...is it meant to be that way?

I can detonate the liver, but I can't melt it.  I think the problem is in the temperature processing code for organs.  I'll take care of it for the actual version.

Another one:

If I enter the Spell Editor I can no longer see the icon for the spell.
But I could do that in the first release.

While actually playing the game I can see the spell icon...strange.

ok, here's my list :

1 I would like to be able to try to play armok in 1024 x 768. Is there any way to change the resolution?

2 when using the heal spell that is targetted on your character can you make the list of body parts and organs colour coded? That way I don't have to flip-flop between the wounds screen and back to the heal spell just to pick out the injured body part.

3 I used the heal spell on my character's battered lung. But it scarred instead. Is this how it's suppose to work?

4 Instead of picking 1 spell at a time for each use. How about having the last spell "hot-keyed" that way I can click on the spell icon, and then heal as many broken toes my character has.
