You need to refine your statement a bit, but if I'm correct in my interpretation then I'm for it. Maybe traveling merchants even?

like maybe you find some treasure or some food or a fairy gives you a masterpiece sword and yes merchants would be a good idea (I was in a hurry when I wrote the first post that's why it was so bad)

Hold on a second please, why would a fairy hold a masterpiece weapon, and then why would she hand it over to you? It doesn't make sense.
A treasure... well, I have some troubels figuring out a guy walking in the forest, stumbling on a root and then a treasure chest falling down a few feet away.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not mocking you, it's just not the way DF deals with this sort of events. So, let's get started.

Once caravan Arc is more fleshed out, real merchants groups will travel, and you'll be able to meet them, follow them, perhaps they'd even hire you as a mercenary.
You can already find migrants on the world map I think, and a few versions back it was quite a normal sight.
You could find bandits' camp or hideout, fall in an ambush from the elves your civ is at war with.

By the way, if you travel near an undiscovered site, does it bring you on the more detailed mode, with the "you have discovered ..." ?

The idea of encountering magical creatures though - nymphs, fairies, wood sprites, leprechauns, etc, would be kinda cool though.  It  would preclude the implementation of magic first, though.

I checked by running an adventurere near a kobold cave in the plains. Nothing happens when you travel in this square, even 38 times (I counted.)
Also, even knowing it was there, I couldn't find it.
Finally, I had to wait for a kobold to get far enough to be shown as a migrant. I travelled near him and finally found other kobolds, and then the cave.
But there wasn't any message, whereas there was one with a cave in the mountains I found.

The fact I had to wait for kobold to get far is, I think, quite cool. After all, the cave was hidden. But there should be a chance to stumble across it, as for any hidden site (such as hypothetic bandit camp, hideout, stolen gold hidden, hermit lair, ...)

Also, just came to think of it. After a rather long time, ruins should be hidden on the world map until you learn of them. It'd make for awesome random encounters, especially if undead come back in.

Grand_Marquis, about magical creatures, there would need to be such beings first. Then, I suppose you could encounter them as every other, perhaps with some specificities (guardian spirits appearing when you kill a non-hostile animal for instance).

Yaddy, I remember soon good and evil biomes will get off to be replaced by less manichean, more sphere related biomes.

good cause the good and evil biomes make it to easy to avoid random encounters. now that I think about it if I could to this again than I'd call it more interesting random encountours

or for that matter, non-random encounters.  Though I guess encounters in DF already have a bit of logic behind them.  But it would be nice if it became even more fluid.

I caught a leprechaun and wished for a shinier sword!
I had my -Iron short sword- replaced with a +Iron short sword+
I should have just taken the dang pot of gold.

Good Random Encounters I support as long as they obviously don't get out of hand, or heck Double Edged... OR Fake good encounters

Imagine your walking into the woods and an injured Fairy Queen and her dead possy is being attacked by a Demon. You slay that demon and she gives you the sword of the Moon God who she worships.

However while this weapon is an Artifact... You cannot seem to throw it away... Also every night you transform into a Fire Imp which is the form the Moon God takes.

I can think of many of these!

Now that I think about it, there doesn't really even seem to be any basis for good encounters. If your dude was interrupted while travelling, its very unlikely that its because some fairy wants to give him all her stuff for some reason..

In fact, fairies probably would just avoid the adventurer, they dont want to be squished.
