Mac Version Issue
« on: August 27, 2008, 10:12:45 am »

I've noticed that, when playing DF on my Mac, the FPS counter in the corner of the screen constantly reads 0.

Obviously it's wrong, the game is running really fast....

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Sorry, thats just the way it is for now.  It says so in the little 'mac users read me' file you get when you unzip DF.

If you're a programmer, it should be a short fix to enabler_osx.cpp once you figure out the flow of control.  Check the battle champs package (it's linked to / was created for the 40c announcements thread).

Heh, I'm no rogrammer, so that makes no sense to me.

What is the battle champs package, by the way?

You think?

I'm mainly a Windows person.  The reason I got a Mac laptop (where I run DF) is because 3 of my 4 college classes require me to use software that is 'Mac Only' so....

I don't run DF on my PC because the thing puts out enough heat to up the temperature by about 10 degrees.  The weather is far too warm to hang out near that thing right now.  My laptop, however, is mobile, so I can go hang out in the basement where it's cool, and it doesn't pump out heat nearly as much.

Congrats for making no bloody sense.

It's searing hot here every day. My computer has a STANDARD cooling system and it never overheats the slightest.

The key? PROPER VENTILATION! It's not enough to stick a fan and call it a day.

I don't have the resources to set up the proper ventilation.  I'm a teenage college student living with his dad.

By the way, have you actually run a computer in a closed room, using resource-intensive programs, for a long period of time?  Do that, then compare the temperature in that room with the temperature outside the room.  It makes a difference, believe me.  As for why I work with the door closed - my music doesn't exactly work well with what my dad does all day, and working in silence (or with headphones) drives me absolutely insane.

I'm not saying the computer overheats, I'm saying it puts out a good amount of heat.  The '10 degrees' part may be exaggeration, but it's not entirely false.

...Oh, and thanks for making this a troll-fest.  Always love the trolls.

Troll?

What do you think proper ventilation is? A huge air conditioner?

I meant the airflow inside the rig. That can cool it a whole lot more than just slapping a fan on.

It should be sucked in from the front and blown out the back. Preferably sucking in lower than blowing it out.

I did take temp measurements. No difference.

My rig is even cool to the touch.

Yes, I do run resource intensive programs for long periods of time. I do regular thorough virus scans and other maintenance procedures.

If you meant leave it running full throttle rendering a crapton of stuff and somehow playing a game while I am not there, then you're an idiot. There is NO PURPOSE to doing that.

I don't see what you're complaining about. This IS a Mac problem. Macs are NOT gaming rigs. They will never be gaming rigs. Today one has no time to solve minor computability issues. Besides, your point is still invalid. If you wont shell out a few bucks to cool your computer but will shell out agony and pain by using a mac, you're either very lazy or very... insane?

No trolling intended by the way. But what you're doing by using a mac can be compared to using square wheels on your car just cause they are lighter and easier to move around.

Let me guess - you think I know nothing about computers because I own a mac.

I AM A CERTIFIED WINDOWS PC TECHNICIAN.  I KNOW WHAT YOU MEANT BY VENTILATION.  HOWEVER, A CUSTOM-BUILT COMPUTER WITH BAD COOLING BECAUSE I WAS ON A TIGHT-ASS BUDGET PUTS OUT A LOT OF HEAT, AND I CANNOT FIX THIS RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY TO THROW AT A COMPUTER I BARELY USE.

As far as touching the case, I don't feel any heat whatsoever on any part of the computer tower.  That's NOT THE PROBLEM.

Further, I know that macs are not gaming systems.  I'm a gamer, I have dozens, if not hundreds, of games, on my PC, ranging from newer games to old DOS games that I run using emulators to get past XP's dislike for old programs.  I was simply reporting an issue that I noticed with the mac version, when you decided to attack me JUST FOR USING A MAC.

Just to note - the reason I run DF on this mac is not because I think it'll do better, but because it means that I can play the goddamned game outside my bedroom.  If I could have purchased a windows laptop and still been able to work on my college assignments, I WOULD HAVE.

Before you go on about 'why do you barely use the PC if you prefer it' or any such shit, I will say this - I can't do ANY of the work I need to do on it, and I don't have enough time to just sit up there playing games without doing any work.  I can play DF on my mac and still run other programs so I can do classwork and such.  DF is something I look at every once in a while, pump out a few dozen orders, start digging for an expansion wing to the fortress, etc, then I get my ass back to working on things for class.  Whenever something big happens in DF, the damned thing pauses anyway, so it's not as though I can't look away for a few minutes.

One final note - a troll doesn't need to be aware that it is a troll.  You are attacking me whether you 'intend' to or not, and that is trolling.  Making aggressive statements (attacks) on someone is trolling.

I did not insult your intellect.

But from what I know, using a mac to play games. BAD IDEA! No matter bloody what.

Besides, what you just said now was "I can't afford to do something correctly so I want to be able to do this my way and my way should be 100% correct."

Now instead of being the dumb one here and continuing this argument, let me try and help you with your problem. Next time, no need you yell.

Seems like a generic compatibility problem. Source? The rig being a Mac and not a PC. Like I said before, I assume that Mac is the problem.

You see, Today one is busy. He can't invest too much time porting it onto a system nobody really uses for gaming.

About your statement of you not having enough money so you are gonna use a mac, all I have to say is this.

If you buy a cheap sub standard item, you are gonna get a whole less bang for your buck.

Hi!

Yanlin: I have to say that you are seriously missing the point here. Your initial statement that using the Mac version was in and of itself a problem, may be your personal opinion, but was totally uncalled for and not needed in this thread.

The Mac version is something officially released by Toady One and any problems related to that version are welcome at the forums as far as I know (if I am wrong, please provide a link to the forum rule stating that).

It is nice that you care about Toady's schedule, but if Toady decides doing something is worthwhile then it sounds rather awkward to attack those benefitting from it, especially when they present feedback which they hope would be useful.

Toady is supporting the Mac version, regardless of whether you like it or not, and if you simply attack Mac users based on that, that is actually what I would call trolling.

Sorry about the inflamatory post, but the attack you made in your initial post was really annoying.

Deathworks:  Thank you for your supportive post.

Yanlin:  As Deathworks (basically) said, if Toady One didn't want to deal with problems with the Mac port of DF, he wouldn't have made it in the first place.

...what you just said now was "I can't afford to do something correctly so I want to be able to do this my way and my way should be 100% correct."

I don't insist on everything working perfectly, or I would not be playing an Alpha release of an independently developed game, nor would I play most commercially developed, officially released games.  I was simply reporting a problem that I had noticed.

MODERATORS:  As this topic seems to have devolved into an idiotic troll-fest, I'm asking that it be locked or deleted.  The problem I reported appears to have been discovered prior to my original post, and further discussion here is 1) unnecessary, and 2) plainly not going to occur under this particular topic.  I apologize for any misconduct I may have demonstrated here.
