Journal of "James" Monomkun, 18th Felsite, Year 502, entry thirteen.

One of our useless peasants was not so useless, it seems. Minkot Shorasteesh began acting strangely, her friends reported, and began gathering strange materials and locking himself up in the Craftsdwarves workshop. He stayed in there for several hours, with the occasional loud noise or shout being heard by those outside the locked door. Finally, one of the metalsmiths broke the lock open and barged into the room to find Minkot, staring dumbly at a wooden scepter, the name of which he whispered was "Prairiemetals the Mechanism of Arenas." The name was strange enough, but what was even stranger is that the man seemed to snap out of it a moment later, not remembering a thing about what happened the last three days.

Sadly, he didn't remember how he made the scepter, either. A damn fine scepter it is, really. he would have been useful if he had. Oh well, he can go back to lounging around and hauling the occasional item that needs moved.

Useless sodding peasants.

Fist time joining a community fortress. This should be good!

I'd like the Furnace Operator if at all possible. Second choice the Engraver. Name, Steelion. A quiet sort, is happiest when he's just doing his job.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 25th Felsite, Year 502, entry fourteen.

I've talked with our new Furnace Operator. He calls himself Steelion. At least it is appropriate, though I am long past thinking of names as strange. A man of few words, he gets his job done well, and doesn't question me when I ask things of him. He'll do well here, I think.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 13th Hematite, Year 502, entry fifteen.

It seems that even the humans have heard of us, or at least their entrepreneurs have. A couple of merchant wagons, along with a "Guild Representative" -- whatever a 'guild' is -- to discuss trade relations. I'll detail what we buy and sell here afterward.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 14th Hematite, Year 502, entry sixteen.

I've spoken with the representative, and requested very large amounts of food, drink, and metal materials. Hopefully we can afford them all next year, as the human wore a sleazy smile the entire time I was requested everything. I judge that it cannot be a very good thing.

It seems they also have a few requests. Mostly, they want weapons, food and powder. We should be able to oblige the first, but you would think that our requesting food would have given him the hint that we might not have much of it to sell.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 14th Hematite, Year 502, entry seventeen.

The humans had much to offer. We bought lots of meat, several barrels of foreign alcohol, and some berries to make our own. I also bought a few bins of leather, to replace the ones we lost earlier last year. In exchange, the humans seemed plenty satisfied with the mountain of trinkets we plopped in front of them. I think I saw one of them mouth the word "shiny," but I am sure I'm imagining things. Nonetheless, we made out quite well, and will hopefully do even better next year.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 26th Galena, Year 502, entry eighteen.

Another one of our people have been possessed by some spirit (Or perhaps temporary insanity -- I doubt anyone knows the difference), a Fish Dissector this time. He is calling for a myriad of materials - wood, shells, cloth, and thread. We just so happen to have all, except the cloth and thread, which I abstained from purchasing from the humans, opting for leather bags instead.

I have heard tales of such cases, where a possessed spirit does not get what it wants. Right now the man is sitting in the Craftdwarves workshop, sulking and occasionally shouting for his things. I've had the strong, stone door locked from the outside. If anything happens, now, at least the problem will be contained.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 12th Limestone, Year 502, entry nineteen.

More of our dwarven brethren have been sighted, along with their wagons. Hopefully they brought what we requested before. My only fear is that we will not be able to afford it all, as our craft production seems to be quite slow, thanks to that fool who is still throwing fits in that room. Who knows, maybe the traders have some cloth on them. If nothing else, I need to set up a separate workshop anyway.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 16th Limestone, Year 502, entry twenty.

Negotiations with the Liaison are finished. Ordered everything we need - food, drink, steel, etc. They in turn ordered earrings and ammunition. What they want with the two, I fear to ask. Perhaps it is best that I left the capital after all.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 16th Limestone, Year 502, entry twenty-one.

I gave away every last one of our crafts, but we got what we needed, with some few insignificant exceptions. A few patches of cloth to hopefully satisfy the jabbering fool, as well.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 7th Sandstone, Year 502, entry twenty-two.

The Fish Dissector has finally went insane, and has been dealt with quickly by Zako and our dogs. A tragedy, to be sure, but the stopgap he caused in Craft production makes me feel little sympathy.

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 2th Sandstone, Year 502, entry twenty-three.

Another small group of migrants. Nothing impressive, except for another metalcrafter, who will, as always, be put to good use.

1 Metalcrafter
1 Animal Dissector
1 Gem Setter (With one pet horse and pet mule)
1 Craftsdwarf
2 Leatherworkers
1 Peasant

Journal of "James" Monomkun, 24th opal, Year 502, entry twenty-four.

The first level of our tower is nearly completed, with the walls finished and the floor about 25% done. I've decided to make the first floor a sort of "entrance hall," to be lined with statues, chairs, and decorations for the walls, using light colors to create a cool, relaxed sort of feeling. Above that, I'll dedicate several floors for industry use, and then I shall begin on apartments. I'm not sure exactly how many floors I want to dedicate to industry, but with the plans I have drawn up, it will be easy to retrofit a floor either way further down the line.

***

I've been debating with myself. Should I use all-wood for interior stuff like furniture and cubicle walls? Or should I just go with stone to make sure everything is more "dwarven?"

We've had our first child born today in the camp. The mother, Edzul Rigothang, and the father, Tun Nishalen (Who also happens to be our Sheriff), have been given the week off from work to celebrate.

Use whatever material is convenient. Perhaps make sure the fancier offices have fancier material that is consistent.

Yeah, I ultimately decided my base material would be Limestone, because it's rock and it's white (Which is nice on the eyes). I made this decision because I realized that, at the rate we were burning through wood, I'm already going to have to start buying extra from caravans. I can't afford another drain on our lumber supplies in the form of walls and furniture. Beds alone will probably kill us...
