The Industrial Age... A Community Fortress
« on: August 26, 2008, 10:03:02 pm »

I've been wanting to start one of these for a while now. For now, this thread will serve to judge interest, and/or take suggestions.

The basic premise is that the entire fort is going to be above-ground. Original, eh?

Oh, and all of the buildings will be steel sky-scrapers of varying heights (I'm hoping to get the highest one to level 20 or higher). No food production except cooks and brewers (Do they count as "food production?"); most of the resources will hopefully be brought in by trade (As most things are in the big city). No wood or stone buildings except in the very beginning - hopefully everything will be iron, steel, or other precious metals. The only underground will be cellars and such, and to capitalize on that, we'll have aquifer, so underground stuff can't go too deep.

What do you all think? Worth expanding upon?

EDIT: We Begin!

Journal of "James" Monomkun, Director of Tempest Towers, Year 500, entry one.

They always say that to be the best is a good thing. It means you get the best jobs, and the best rooms, and the largest acounts. But there is always a downside. Oh yes, a downside.

My name is James Monomkun. I am the most reknown architect and mason in my kingdom. For the last few years, I'd settled down comfortably in the Capital, enjoying the fruits of my many labors. That is, of course, until last week.

It seems the King has a son. One he loves very much. It seems that The Son got a bright idea, that instead of digging into the ground like all sane dwarves do, wouldn't be just oh so fun to instead live high in the sky, in towers made of stone and steel? Now, you would expect the King, if he were himself sane, to pat the brat on the head and ignore him. But oh ho, no, you see, The King loves The Son very much. So much, that he assigned his best architect to the job, giving me pick of the city for my crew, and some starting funds.

Always a downside to everything. A big, bloody downside.

Okay, a few suggestions.
1. I doubt you will have enough iron and steel for massive sky scrapers, so you should use them as 'supports' that are beams running up the 'interior' of the sky scraper.
2. There should be a layer of wood surrounding each beam.
3. Floors should be smoothed stone.
4. Basements should have an exterior wall built around it, made out of bars or blocks.
5. A plumbing system should connect all the buildings to the aquifer, creating a 'sewer'.
6. Refuse will be dumped into the 'sewer'.
------
New ones
7. Starting buildings should be 1 story houses, with a cellar for booze and food.
8. Each house should accommodate two romantically involved dwarves, their family. Or they could house one single dwarf, but being downsized.
9. Houses should be furnished with 'X' number of beds, 'X+1' number of chairs, 'X/4' (rounded up) number of tables, and 'X*4' space in the cellar. 'X' being equal to the number of residents.
10. Houses should be floored with wood or stone blocks, with stone blocks or wood for walls too.

Those are my suggestions. I will post if I have new ones.

I actually had planned most of that myself. I want them to be "modern" skyscrapers, so stuff like wooden furniture, etc, are a must. But I'm hoping to get at least 60-70% of all total things to be metal. Trinkets made out of silver and gold; tables and such made of out tin and/or copper and iron;

I'm also going to have "roads" in between, made of stone.

Your idea of sewers actually gives me a few ideas of my own though... No need to reveal everything that is going to happen, though, or else this will be boring.

Maybe I'll have to get rid of the aquifer, though. Metal through trade alone will be pretty difficult, if not impossible. Underground mining operations can help fill in where trade fails.

Cheat reactions but not dwarf speeds and see how fast you can fill the map.

Good thing you want "modern" skyscrapers...  I believe most of the metal is concentrated in the frame anyway.  You can simply make the walls out of glass, assuming you have sand of course.  For an extra challenge, make sure it's clear glass!

So it turns out that dumping magma on skeletons is either a really bad idea or maybe like the best idea ever.

I always use clear glass. What kinda cheapo do you think I am? :P

But yeah, I was planning on making sure every "office" had it's own 'glass wall' of windows. I was thinking that the higher levels of the sky-scrapers could be gem-windows, for the big-wigs.

The more I think about this, the less steel it seems I'm going to use. Perhaps I over-reacted at first at how much I'd need. Still, building a modern city in DF ought to be pretty damn fun, especially with all the other things I'm thinking about adding...

Aquifer is definitely out, though. I'll have to find another way to get water.

Yeah, but that would be unrealistic. At least half of all skyscrapers are metal, and I'd like to at least try to recreate this.

Gonna be lots of glass, though. You can be sure of that.
