Real life DF stories
« on: October 03, 2007, 10:46:00 am »

I don't know if there's a single thread for these, though I've seen them in other threads. Real-life news stories that sound like something out of Dwarf Fortress.

First up: A house built over a cyanide pit in China collapses, killing 9. If ever we can build beds on top of bridges over the magma river, this will happen!

Wow, that was one hell of a fey mood
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_the_Love_of_God_%28artwork%29

quote:
For the Love of God is a sculpture by artist Damien Hirst produced in 2007. It consists of a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with 8,601 flawless diamonds, including a pear-shaped pink diamond located in the forehead of the skull. Costing £14 million to produce, the work went on display at the White Cube gallery in London at an asking price of £50 million, which at the time, if sold, would be the highest price ever for a single work by a living artist.....

WHAT.
THE.
HELL.

Read the link, it's more weirder than the title implies...

Maybe Toady has modeled authentic human behavior perfectly and there's no need to add common sense to them after all.

POWER GOAL 2XX: Dwarf on a fey mood builds weak bridge over magma river and suicides. Mourning dwarves go over the bridge to mourn and the bridge collapses below them (as seen on TV!).

Related: this thread.

I posted this one in FotF: The Lake Peigneur Disaster, a huge lake accidentally drains into a salt mine, causing all kinds of havoc.

The question is, does DF imitate life, or does life imitate DF?

I flew down to visit my dad and while we were waiting for my baggage the conveyor stopped. Several minutes go by and my dad jokes they they must be on break. He had no clue how funny that joke really was  :p

Lesee....

There has been an epidemic of people starting fist fights and breaking things at school recently.

My city has unwanted unskilled immigrants that it doesn't know what to do with.

There have been occurrences of people getting washed away in floods, although it doesn't happen off bridges.

People leave their refuse everywhere, leaving someone else to take time out of their day to move it to a trash bin.

People have been complaining about the mandates of politicians.

All of these remind me of DF in one way or another

Classic real-life DF:
Charcoal Kiln opened to lure visitors http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/20070915TDY15004.htm

There was another news story (that I can't find now) about how charcoal-makers in South America were using up all of the local wood.   Not to mention recent mining cave-ins... like in the Sago mine, they were pulling down support pillars on their way out (every Dwarf knows that's a bad idea!).

I just remembered about Centralia, PA. From Wikipedia:
quote:
An exposed vein of coal ignited in 1962 due to the standard policy of burning the garbage on a weekly basis in the borough landfill, located in an abandoned mine pit in the southeast portion of Centralia. Attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful, and it continued to burn throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Adverse health effects were reported by several people due to the carbon monoxide produced.
Eventually the town was abandoned. From a little further down: "There are no current plans to extinguish the fire, which is consuming an eight-mile seam containing enough coal to fuel it for 250 years." You really don't want to get fire near your fortress' coal mines!

Also, this isn't a story, but it reminded me of DF: The longest place name in the U.S. and sixth longest in the world: Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg "Englishmen at Manchaug territory at the meeting and fishing place at the boundary."

Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg isn't far from me actually.  In middle school I got extra credit by memorizing the spelling of it and reciting it in front of my social studies teacher.  I did it in 30 seconds or so - her jaw dropped and she said she had never heard anyone spell it so quickly without making a mistake.

Good times.  :D

A vault, dug deep into a glacier (article)

...it's actually for seeds, but it's still a pretty Dwarven thing to do. Defend the hoard! (Edit: That's hoard, not horde. Repel the horde!)

Unrelated: Your brain has been torn!

That last line just feels so... I don't know.

Lawyer dodging bullets at point-blank range even after getting shot

I seem to remember watching the full video of this. It is funny in a very dark sense, but the guy lives in the end, and his dodging is spectacular.
