Is it random, or is there a way to chose which limbs to attack? Thanks.

You can choose things for wrestling, but not for normal combat, so random.
Apparently Toady is planning to add the option, though I don't know how long it will take.

I imagine it won't be very difficult. Perhaps he could make it so that in wrestling mode it adds the option 'sever' after joint locks. Also, certain weapons could have a higher chance of 'severing' the limb. Maybe you could focus attacks on certain organs too, like a dagger to the spleen, or a hammer to the brain.

The only way to sever a specific limp is to mod in a race with only one limb. You'd probably just behead and bisect them all the time instead of chopping off the intended limb though  .

Semi-related:  Do higher skilled fighters go for the instant kill more often?  Once my adventurers get skilled they seem to either chop things in half or decapitate fairly regularly, and in dwarf mode I had a swordmaster who was a head-chopping machine.

The only problem I see with that is people instantly targeting the head and whatnot- a lot of combat luck has to do with which body parts you randomly target first- I once had a human guard stay alive for quite a bit with all of his arms and legs cut off. (yes, I made sure to make the Monty Python refrence)

Perhaps if there was an internal 'block' mechanism that caused various types of attacks to weaken the 'block' of different body parts to make insta-kills less likely, it would work better.

For example, you could make it so that attacking the chest would cause the defender to move to attempt to nullify said attack- thus temporarily weakening the block count.

Certain other things could make block less effective, like stunning, special attacks, or the physical position of a foe. (I bet that goblin swordmaster that rides that GCS would have an easier time beheading their rival if said rival was encased in a cocoon of silk.)
