Leaving your fort running all the time...
« on: August 17, 2006, 09:59:00 am »

Anybody do this? It seems to me like a good goal. That is, your dwarves being able to run the fort without your supervising everything. I've considered doing it, when i just leave the computer then and again, but always thought better of it.

Off the top of my head, I can't  think of any way to automate farming so that you could go away from it.  Same with building new bedrooms.

That is true, i forgot about replanting farms and accommodating immigrants. Would've been neat to just sit back and watch my dwarves be all self sufficient for a few years.

well you could just build and place a ton of empty beds in anticipation. Not much you can do about the farming I suppose...
It would be cool if farms weren't destroyed in winter. Instead maybe they are rendered inoperable until every square of the farm is flooded. That way your farm positions and crop rotations are saved throughout the year.

It's pretty easy to become self-sufficient in the caves.  Couldn't you set your dwarves to "can't go outdoors," lock/moat/block off the entrance and leave all immigrants to die in the wilderness?  That'd take care of one problem.

As interesting a mind set as that is, you would have no way of feeding your dwarves unless you stepped in and reset your farms once a year. Or there were enough fish in the river to support you for a year. Are there even fish in the river? Although the idea of digging farther east and hunting the creatures inside the mountain for food is intriguing, although i doubt it would be enough to sustain your dwarves consistantly.

There's an issue with automatic zoom-pauses when you are attacked or when migrants arrive, etc.  There was a debug option to turn those off for continuous play, and I could allow that again.

You could also theoretically support your dwarves constantly through milking, I think, if you bred enough milkable creatures.  But there would be the problem of fey moods...  you need to be there to supply the things they request, and even aside from that, what if someone takes over an important workshop?  Its queue will be blanked when they're done with it no matter if they succeed or not.

I'm going to have to try this. I'll just leave the game running whne I go to work - I imagine the result will be disastrous, but that's part of the fun.  :)

I've done this 'survival of the fitest' thing before with Majesty and a little game I used to play called Creatures. Should be interesting to see how my dwarves hold up..

Tell the game to record, too. That way if something did go wrong, you can load the record and watch what happened.
