Holy sweet mother of z-levels
« on: August 25, 2008, 08:55:16 pm »

So I went off and genned a freezing world to play with ice traps, and I poked around a bit on embark and found a neat spot where a named mountain is just sitting in the middle of a plain, thought it looked neat and embarked.

HOLY SHIT. I show up to find my dwarves perched on the side of a rock pinnacle that is a close to sheer as things get in DF these days. It is, I kid you not, 128 z-levels from the top of this spike to ground level. (The ground, interestingly, is perfectly flat and the mountain just sort of busts out of it.)

So yeah. I'm pretty sure it's going to lag all to hell (there's a chasm full of creatures bisecting the mountain to about halfway up), but this is too epic to pass up. So... thoughts? Comments? Anybody else encountered anything like this before?

Edit: Okay, I zipped up the region for anyone who wants to fiddle with it. I unfortunately didn't save the worldgen params, but I don't think it would matter since I genned on Linux and the results differ from Windows gens.

I have, remove the ramps all around it so that the threat is more contained. and Dig In.
Just for fun, remove all of the bottom layer to see if it collapses into the chasm when it caves in.

what's an ice trap?

SPOILER ALERT
Build a Trade Depot anywhere on the map.  now hold Shift+D (Depot access display) while viewing a Z-level that has been completely untouched by miners.  All 'normal' stone areas will have big red D's all over them.  Any area with *any* sort of site feature will be blank (no D's).

I´m impressed, the highest amount of z-levels I ever had (from highest z-level in air to the depest one) was just maybe 50 or 60 at a steep cliff.

Have fun, I hope the mountain levels above ground have enough room to build nice levels in them :)

what's an ice trap?

Well, I was thinking specifically of expanding this to allow for multiple firings (and possible other nastiness). Basically, any trap that exploits water+freezing temps to kill stuff.

Wait, is it just a column or is it the side of a mountain? If it's a side, then we have enough of that. If it is just a near-vertical shaft in the middle of some plains, then some "fun" is to be had

drop some goblins or kobolts or elves down that 128 zlevels.
Logged
That last gobbo would stand there, missing an arm, punctured in a kidney, liver, and spleen, fading in and out of consciousness at the far end of where the drawbridge would go, and his last sight would be the drawbridge dropping down and smashing him like a bug.

God DAMN I love this game!

You could have yourself a good old 2-D Dwarf Fort experience going on there if you dig in at the base of the mountain.
What kind of features does it have?

Looks to me like a perfect spot for one of those gigantic sculptures people make.

The first screenshot: I get too many sites like that.

 The second shot: Love.

in my current game, I'm 147 z levels up. Next to a big chasm that bisects the mountain, but haven't breached it yet. only in the first autumn, already found platinum, rubies and saphires. my best start so far.
