Sport. think your dwarves need a sport to play? Answer the poll or Post ideas for new sports below. Serious suggestions please.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Goblin skull hackysack? Quaffing championships? Regular sports would feel a little undwarven.

This reminds me of these two powergoals:

PowerGoal49, SCREAM BALL, (Future): Trolls take the captives and see if they can throw them all the way over the chasm to each other.
PowerGoal50, SKULL GAMES, (Future): Trolls stack skulls to see how high the piles can get, bowl with skulls and play catch with skulls.

True, all dwarven games should be alcoholic. Chugging contests for everyone.

Elves should have contests watching grass grow.

Humans can have american football/rugby.

Goblins can have babyball, which is like basketball except with babies. And you can use weapons. And there are no rules.

And the gods can have Tacticus.

Things like a rock throwing competition would be neat.  Big burly field events.

I believe a list of proper dwarven sports are hacking, burning, and bashing.

The rules for hacking are, naked child is sent out into the wilds to bring a number dangerous things to the fortress.  Guards then get to chop the things to bits with thier battle axes.  If the guards feel they aren't getting covered in enough blood then will allow the mechanics to play.  If the child doesn't come back, then the rules say it is time to pop down to the dining room, have a drink, and find another child.

The rules for burning are tell a noble that really cool things happen when that lever gets pulled.  When they get to the lever lock the door and laugh at how dumb they are.

Bashing takes a very different turn.  For this game every dwarf picks up a hammer and a set of armor.  Then they all tell each other the most irritating and embarassing stories they can remember.  This storytelling goes on until only one of them hasn't completely lost it and rampaged about the fortress in a tantrum.  The dwarf that held it together is declared the winner.

How about such things as curling and shotput?  Maybe even golf (can you imagine designing golf courses for your dwarves?  There's a neat game out there called SimGolf which was actually a lot of fun, I loved designing cruel and unusual courses and then beating the crap out of "pro golfers" just because their AI sucked--they couldn't see the short-shot into the middle of the trees that allowed you to make the long shot to the straitaway, attempting to go for the straightaway from the tee landed your ball in a forest; or the one-tile islands that were sloped towards the putter, you had to make a clean shot over 5 feet of water into the hole or the ball would take a drink).

Hahahahahah.  I loved SimGolf.  The courses I made always ended up being impossible for everything that played it..  except for me.

Combat drinking and Hammering (which includes 2 dwarfs, 2 hammers and a lot of large stones to see which dwarf will turn the most amount of large strones into pebbles within a fixed time) seem to be the most dwarvenly types of sport to me.

The great thing is, both types of sport can be carried out by kids and adults alike (well, if kids are strong enough to destroy a massive granite door with a single blow during tantruming, they´re also strong enough to raise a hammer and smash stones to pebbles :D )

Viking and Scottish sports would be the best; wrestling, shot-put, archery, axe/hammer toss.

Anyone seen the British remake of The Longest Yard (Mean Machine I think it's called). Stars Vinnie Jones as a soccer star sent to prison.

Anyhoooo in it, there's a game whereby two people are handcuffed together, with the chain running through a loop on the table. Each round, they have to take a drink, then punch the other guy in the face. Last man conscious wins.

This is what dwarves play. Also explains their lack of brain cells.

Highland games

Almost all olympic level 'sports' are based on military skills. (Or were, till 1900s...)

What are the dwarven military skills?  Well, the three no-brainers are Thud!, Marksmanship, and Sparring (Duelling?).

Dwarves don't really run to combat or use athletic skills to climb obstacles.  They don't use thrown weapons in combat.

Perhaps some competions to abstract 'traditional' dwarven combat skills.

High Diving = Dwarf jumps off a cliff into a pool.  If both make it out (without help?), the cliff is raised 1 z-level

The Gauntlet.  Dwarf procedes through a crowd while dragging a stone.  He's beaten on his way through.

Privation.  Dwarf is locked in a room without food or water.  First dwarf to give up, loses.

Synchronized Lever Pulling.  Judged activity.

Patience.  First dwarf to move loses.
