EA lives and breathes on their sports titles.  The fans of their sports titles, like sheep, buy the new version every year.  EA is not going to die.

Unfortunately, you're right.  Just don't forget the sims - now that's a cash cow they can keep milking forever.

Yeh, but I still care if they fall. Especially because they'd done scumbag things like secure exclusive rights to league licenses for their sports games; which is effectively a near monopoly and tries to prevents others from making better games that expose theirs for the crap they are. I mean, imagine the outrage on these forums if tomorrow Blizzard had secured sole rights to fantasy creatures (i.e.; dwarves)!

Edit: Sorry for the run on sentence, it's too early, no coffe, construction outside, can''t think.

I actually started coding ASCII football game (the one where you kick the ball with your foot), but then I realised how much work would be implementing AI and all those rules. I was coding it in raw C then and it was nightmarish. I'm planning to reimplement it in Common Lisp someday, which would make it easier to develop.

Speaking of Spore Fortress, way back in 2004 or so on the Gaming Steve forums, someone was looking for programmers to make a Spore roguelike. The project never got any support, but ever since then it's something I've been wanting to do. Since it wouldn't require any crazy procedural animation stuff, you could allow even more flexibility in creature design, etc. I have a lot of little notes about how it could work lying around.

A lot of the bloats and arcs could allow for something similar. I think the original Armok is the closest thing to Spore out there, in terms of how creatures were defined. It looked absolutely hideous, but I thought that things like the stance system were pretty impressive.

What EA does is look for companies that make awesome games, absorb them, realease shitty games untill it no longer makes any profit and then leave it to rot. Look what they did to C&C for example. First they released a generic USA vs teh terrorists setting, they stuck it on a vastly underpowered engine(nothing can hold formation and they walk in a line no matter what you do and made the story basicly "uhm, we are faction 1, they are faction 2, go kill them or someting". And they called it "Generals". Having "Learnt from their mistakes(somebody made them play their own game)" They decided to listen to the "fans" before making Tiberium Wars. First, they screw up the name, then the unit design(why the hell is nod a militia, they had the most advanced units in other games), then they only listened to the "pro" gamers who only want a perfectly mirrored game where they can have their contests about who has the fastest micro. Currently there are even polls going to remove unit acceleration, make bomber powers fall from orbit to reduce the "f***ing retarded randomness of the planes" and make all aircraft hover instead of fly. And did i mention they want pinpoint artillery so it's less of a "dice game". Most rediculous of all: get rid of unit animations so they don't waste time clicking on the air behind the units.

That's actually pretty impressive. I don't know of many game developers that are actually willing to consider getting rid of animation to improve game-play. Dunno about the rest of it, since I haven't played anything past Tiberium Sun, but...

So wait, is this the spore thread or the bash-EA thread now?
(They killed Westwood! I want Earth and Beyond back! etc.)

Heh, and before the spore stuff it was something else.  This thread has been derailed beyond any redemption.

We've already got a thread for that. Dates, at least.

But yeah, what we could do is do the newborn baby style and guess the hour, or even exact time that the DF download hits the page!

My guess is 3:48 PM PST on October 10th.

I agree with all the good stuff said, and disagree with all the bad stuff (about DF).  To all who champion gameplay and can wait, but don't want to build a fortress until the new version comes out, I humbly suggest:  http://www.nethack.org/

Good luck with your wait!
