As far as I've seen, the only part that's been turned more cartoonish is the microbe stage. I may be wrong there (I really hope the awesome gory grab-and-tear extreme eating action is left in as an optional patch if not), but anyway, I'd say it could hardly be considered vapor- or fogware now. It's quite a different thing from that when the company is sitting on a release in order to get the best sales possible.

Or maybe they're in the process of dumbing it down. Bleh.

Sorry to get things off-topic. I seem to have a talent for that. x.x

The only thing that's changed to make Spore more cartoony from the original unveiling is that they actually have the texturing system working now whereas characters were all grey due to unfinished software in the original :P It was /never/ more realistic, just lacking in color. Heck, the original video showed character models based on freaking CARE BEARS of all things.

The Sims actually look like people, though.

Spore-things look like freaking Pokemon for crying out loud.

...Anyone else feel a strange need to evolve dwarves in Spore now?

I sure hope Toady is busy getting df ready for release instead of reading all these random rants about spore  :)

For some "real"(or not, depending on how you look at it)vaporware you need to look in the direction of Duke Nukem(8 years and yet to see a beta) and Darkfall(game was "ready" for beta+release in 2004, but now it says "almost done with the core stuff".)

Spore is being kept back because some advertizing dude in the publishing office has "calculated" that the ideal release time is somewhere in 2008.

More likely, Spore is being kept back because EA has entered some financial Deep Shit. At least that's what I read a while ago.

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

Not to go back on topic or anything, but... ("re-rail?")

I think Toady should take as long as he feels is necessary before the game is ready for release.  This development process is so detailed and intricate, I just don't see any room for 'rushing' things out.

Granted, I'm just as excited about the new version as the next fellow, but what everyone seems to keep forgetting is that this stage, the anticipation stage, is easily half the fun.  Savor it!

Tip: look up "posthumous" in a dictionary.

I still get a little misty whenever someone mentions Fallout -- just knowing there will never be another title in that franchise that lives up to the first two...

I've seen the deaths of two other MMO's that spouted very similar goals of non-hack'n'slash gameplay... both were in development many, many years ago. This trend of abandoning projects with these goals is disturbing... I really wonder if our "niche" will ever have an MMO that offers more than what every current MMO on the market now offers.

It's understanding that the "Free-form RP" genres are fairly doomed that makes me support Toady, even if he is taking longer than we hoped to release. He's what gives us hope that someone out there understands that gameplay can extend beyond what buttons you can fit on a game controller. He deserves our unquestioning support for coming as far as he has basically on his own, and that's that...

Seconded. I mean, I've posted over two threads and haven't been flamed to a cinder yet. That's a fucking world record!

Normally when my fifth complaint/suggestion in as many minutes comes up, people start shouting for me to develop my own fucking game. (Caveat: I may take that as a challenge to see how long before the developers themselves start having objections...  :) )
