[40c] Trance Drowning
« on: August 23, 2008, 09:29:05 pm »

I had an occurance that may be associated with a bug. A military group was patrolling alongside a river, and encountered a group of alligators standing nearby on their side of the river. They began harrassing the group of Alligators.

One of the soldiers (whom also happened to have the miserable status at the time) entered a martial trance, and immediately jumped in the river where I guess there was an alligator swimming. Blood started flowing from the spot in the river, and I got the message that he had drowned.

I'm fairly certain that this isn't rational or intended behaviour XD

This bug would probably also be very difficult to reproduce, due to all of the random-ish circumstances. I can provide an (after the fact) save if needed... I have one that is maybe 5 (real time) minutes or so after the incident.

"Very difficult to reproduce"?
They jump into river when they see a fish there all the times! That's why carps, lampreys and other fish is so dangerous.
Someone for some reason decided that fish "drags" them in, but there's no such attack as "drag", dwarves simply jump into water intentionally (well, through "charge" attack). I'd like to see the charge attack removed for fortress mode or dwarves to be more clever and don't use this attack to move to a dangerous tile.

Haha wow, then I guess the 'bug' is an overlook in charging.

Somehow Ive managed to dodge this one up until now, even though I've run maybe a dozen or so fortresses since the 3d version came out. Guess I just got lucky!

I thought the issue had to do with successfully dodging an attack and moving into an adjacent square.  The same problem that causes champions to leap off cliffs when fighting.  :)

So your dwarves aren't getting pulled into the river, they're dodging leaping carp teeth by throwing themselves into the water!

Dwarf are like lemmings.
Except instead of following each other, they follow the most dangerous thing you can find.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

I regard this as good motivation to teach your soldiers how to swim. Even dwarves so modestly skilled as [no title] swimmer tend to fare, well, swimmingly against aquatic beasts.
