In my current game, I couldn't get my dwarves to slaughter any animal, even though, as far as I know, I had everything in order. I had marked several animals for slaughter, I had an active butcher dwarf with nothing else to do, a butcher's shop that allowed every dwarf to work in it, auto slaughter on, and I had given the order to slaughter an animal at the butcher's shop.

In desperation I built another butcher's shop and demolished the old one. Suddenly everything was working as it should! Apparently something had been wrong with the old butcher's shop. After removing it, I noticed that a dwarf had died and decayed there (despite there being a graveyard and plenty of traffic quite near). Perhaps this had caused the problem?

Did he get a fell mood? How did he die then?

It sounds like the shop and its contents were forbidden.  Maybe it's related to auto forbid on death, or maybe you just accidentally created a forbid designation over the area.

To be honest, I have no idea how that dwarf had died. I hadn't noticed it when it happened.

I don't see any zones in that area. The leatherworks that I built in the location of the old butchery also does everything it's supposed to.

If there's such a thing as auto-forbid on death, then that could definitely explain the situation.

Perhaps the position of the impassable tiles of the butcher's shop (NE and E) blocked access to the room? If so, this would also cause the unfortunate dwarf tasked with completing its construction to be trapped inside, and eventually die of hunger/thirst.

Raumkraut, you're a genius! That's it exactly. The access was on the NE tile. I had no idea that was impassable.

So this was not a bug at all, just my ignorance. I'll see if I can change the topic title to reflect that.

Thanks everyone! :)
