Well, take out some points in weapons, its not needed against them. Shield, however, greatly expands your life expectancy, as does armor user.

I usually have shield use as my highest, with the same number of points in weapon and armor use, with the rest thrown into wrestling (I recall someone saying that wrestling skill was used for dodging, dunno if it's true).  This will usually get me through most normal ambushes, though I have had an occasional unlucky roll and gotten my throat ripped out.

Hi!

Yep, for combat you do need the four skills:

Melee weapon of your choice -> gives you the weapon and the ability to use it.

Armor -> gives you armor

Shield -> gives you shield and ability to use it

Wrestling -> gives you the skill need for dodging attacks

And I strongly suggest keeping Swimmer as well, since you may get pushed into a puddle or something during a fight.

Personally, I also suggest to change the combat options so that you stand your ground for normal attacks to avoid jumping into nasty terrain just because a wolf bit at you (although I keep the charging defense as depend on opponent).

With these things in mind, you should be able to have a fair chance. But as JoRo pointed out, accidents can happen once in a while.

Good luck!

As long as you have some weapon, armour and skill points there's not many ways you can actually get killed by wolves. All you have to do it move out from the middle of the pack and try to stay in a position where you're not surrounded and only have to engage a few wolves at a time.

I always get Talented in a Weapon, skilled in Shield, and No Prefix in Swimming and Throwing, and aside from the occasional lucky throat-hit, wolves don't stand a chance.

To begin with I usually do heavy skill in a weapon and wrestling and low skills to work up in armor and shield.  Wrestling is always best defense in my mind.

Get swimming, if you start the ambush right next to a body of water diving into it and swimming across will give you a good head start on running away.  Plus bonus points if the water has fish, the wolves will generally leave you alone to fight those.

Hi!

Only people without proper jobs can become named as drunks in the recent versions, and nearly all town inhabitants have some proper jobs. So, you have to try to recruit those newly named townspeople.

Go to a Goblin Tower. If you see any non-goblins, it might be a POW and will probably come with you.

Go to the keep, it's where all the mercenaries hang out. Just stand by the entrance and ask everyone who comes in if they want to join, you'll get a few people easy.

I finally got an adventurer that could survive those damn wolves. Basically I built a fort on top of the human town I wanted this guy to live in and built a small pool with ramps, made him more wooden bolts and arrows then he'd need to kill the world 10 times over and abandoned.

Swimming really helps with stats. If you sneak while swimming your stats go up twice as fast. You'll be surprised what a little extra toughness will do. You'll get less nausea, way less unconsciousness and tiring and pretty much no stuns. I didn't even realize that most of my 8000 adventures killed by wolves were usually stunned, preventing blocking, parrying and counterattacks.

If you carry enough crap around with you, you'll be extremely slow, which makes you counterattack like a blender against wolves. I once had 12 counterattacks and 5 dead or dying wolves before I even got to take my first turn after an ambush. Also these counterattacks train your weapon skill very fast.

Out of the 20 or so of those that I've collected all were children, so usually not worth the trouble.

If I get attacked by wolves early on I'll usually run a while until I find two trees in a line with a space between them. This way they're forced to attack from one direction and can't surround you. More chances of knocking them into each other too.
