Do merchants respect traffic designations when pathing to the trade depot?

why would this be a big deal? Caravans come by so rarely that they're not gonna make huge amount of traffic. And restricting traffic encourages dwarves to find a new route, they will still walk on restricted zones if the pathing can't find a 'shorter' route. What I mean is you can't force anyone NOT to go somewhere with traffic zoning.

I think they don't care about restrictions, only getting the depot... so make some walls/doors so they don't go through areas you don't want them to.

I meant, if I build a highway across my map, and I designate the whole thing as "high traffic", will the merchants stay on my highway?

I assume because you could defend the caravans (marksdwarves in towers, traps, etc.), if you knew where they'd travel. This would also encourage your dwarves to use the same path, where they'd be somewhat better defended if ambushed.
