Bad framerate yet in 33a
« on: November 01, 2007, 10:49:00 pm »

I have a good computer(not exceptional though) and with the bugfix I generated another world and started a new fortress near what I had thought was a magma vent (but wasnt). The thing is, the framerate isn't as good as I had in another area of the same size (4x5), and it's is fluctuating a lot. There is a chasm in the area, I think, because the initial message cited batmen and I am yet to see them. I don't want to take off temperature and weather and losing important gameplay features. What I think and that maybe there is still a problem with the chasm causing lags.

Weather is a real killer and, afaik it has no real effect on dwarf mode yet (rain or snow doesn't seem to do much of anything).

shutting it off more then doubled my FPS.

I turned it off and got 10 fps. But it's sad to lose gameplay. another thing you lose is bad thoughts from the dwarves caught in rain/snow storms...

My 2GHz computer running Vista ran DF at 10-20 FPS before the update. After installing the newest version and limiting the graphical refresh rate to 10 FPS (vsync is off) I'm now getting well over 50 FPS on a default sized map. The dwarves run around at a blistering speed. I'm in heaven.

My dualcore is doing 30-60 fps on a max size map. It freezes every 1 out of 3 seconds however. I've never seen this behaviour before, most of the time it's just low fps instead of ultra high fps and constat freezing.

I get from 10 to 60 FPS depending on the map I've chosen.  I started on one map with canyons that went all the way to Z-70 from the highest peak, and it was essentially unplayable.  A flatter one, even though it seems to have more critters, does just fine.

This is regardless of map size:  Both my 10FPS and my 60FPS maps were 3x6.

I've found that rivers and brooks cause a weird kind of slowdown for me; they don't actually use more processing power than other maps, but the frame rate will always be 10-20 fps lower than my cap (which normal maps always run at; I can get up to 160 fps out of a basic map, but I keep it at 100), and will fluctuate madly around that number. Increasing the frame rate cap will increase the framerate at which the fluctuation occurs (Ie. setting the cap at 100 gives me 80 +/- 10, setting it at 200 gives me 110 +/- 10).)
