DF psp spinoff?
« on: June 13, 2008, 09:34:00 pm »

A portable Dwarf Fortress idea was discussed before, but obviously fortress mode would be beyond impossible. So, how about a more traditional roguelike with the wound and skill system of DF? It could be a pre-set world that would not need a heavy processor to run. Just imagine,
The spinning Amulet of Yendor strikes the goblin in the head!
It is mangled!

Even if you cut the world generation and leave adventure mode with pre made worlds. A psp probably couldn't handle it. You need a really beefy processor to run DF.

Yeah, even in adventure mode, you still need to handle line of sight and everything.

The only thing is, i can play ToME, a decent rogue-like, and even net-hack, a fairly complex RL, on my psp, and both seem to run fine. The thing I would be most worried about would be wound tracking. Maybe cut down on the minor parts like individual fingers and toes, but it could still be a stretch. The setting could possibly be one town for supplies, and one 99 level cave where only the level you're on would be tracked. I'm not thinking of a df port, more like something unique that could just have a DF feel.

Nethack uses a far more simply system for everything however. For health it uses hitpoints and DF tracks wounds to separate parts of the body.

NetHack has also had over 20 years of development from several taleted volunteer coders and is currently at version 3.4.3, with innumerable patches and spinoffs.

Dwarf Fortress was created by a hobbyist programmer/game designer, was made 5-6 years ago, and is nowhere close to done. Indeed, patience is a virtue.

And it's worth noting that Nethack is in 2d. Dwarf Fortress has to handle 3d pathfinding and sight.

To say nothing of the fact that without the ability to run fortress mode, DF becomes drastically more shallow.  As you kind of touched on with the Amulet of Yendor reference, unless you added objectives and such, I doubt anyone who doesn't already play DF would be interested.

Maybe that's the idea?  I don't know a lot about PSP functionality, but I was assuming this would actually go on sale.

While usually roguelikes have to account for a single dungeon, or a pre-made world like ADOM, DF has to account for a random generated world, where even the vermin are counted...
