Batplosion?!
« on: August 21, 2008, 05:11:53 am »

To keep it short: I had a batplosion on my .40a fortress. Interesting, because I've been playing DF for some time now, and haven't witnessed anything like this before.
So I'm wondering if it's a taster of the future "cave diversity", that is so much requested, a bug, a new feature of the .40a version or something that has existed from the beginning and which I hadn't just discovered?

I've got a picture too, but I was distracted and the bats had already dispersed themselves by the time I came to the thought of taking a screenshot, but here it is:

does bats mind control dwarves into accepting them as pets?  If not, it's not a really a -plosion as you can butcher them faster than they can breed.  Cat mind control however, is irreversible and take away even the option of easy butcher.  Thus the population grows beyond easy control.

It's not such a -plosion as the catplosion. I may have misused the -plosion, but it sounded nice. About 50 bats just appeared into my fortress.  The point is that they came out of nowhere, there's no cave in my map and before the incident I hadn't seen a single bat.

I've had a walrus-splosion, you might say. There are something like 20 walruses and 20 walrus calves out there in the sea, continuously breeding with each other...they seem to be able to swim under the sea and never leave the map so I've had no other wildlife (terrifying glacier so maybe that's a good thing) and I haven't been able to shoot them...

Except bats are vermin, which don't get shot.  They don't do anything but annoy dwarves.

Well, I guess they can be food if the dwarves are exceedingly hungry, but that's not the right way to do things.

Last version I had a batsplosion outside which coincided with a mini-catsplosion.  The cats started to play with the bats, and soon the area around my trading depot was littered with bat chunks.  After a season or so, it quietened down a bit.

I've seen this before too, I'd assume that it is some sort of segment of the cave diversity project.  Only real use is for people who use trappers, though.

I had a batsplosion when I left a goblin siege force laying on the grass to rot.
Sp I just thought: hey, those bats replace crows here, :awesome:!
And then somehow as the goblins rotted at last the bats weren't seen any more.

This Batplosion is simply a result of a cat attacking a swarm of bats, methinks.

You know how you'll disturb large groups of vermin in adventure mode? Thats whats happening, just in fortress mode.

I've had it happen with bats, rats and large roaches.

Yeah, it's nothing new, it's just that vermin bats travel in big packs of a dozen or so.
