Pitchblende? hmm, a dwarven manhatten project sounds fun
« on: August 20, 2008, 10:19:15 pm »

so, upon installing the new DF, i get a world with only 10 rejects.. something of prophecy. and on the first squard under the cursor, i have a volcano.... on the tip of evil mountains, with plenty of black sand, obsidian, and marble. Theres a chasm visible (with cave spider webs near my 2ndary entrance- the wagon was at the mountain peak), and my deceased list tells me i have a hidden underground river somewhere. no HFS in the expanded map i claimed, but of well.

so as i scroll around the cliff faces that i can see, past the iron and aluminum, i find the oddest purple symbol.... pitchblende. i had to look it up, but uranium? thats gonna be FUN! now, the only question is should i build myself a 'fission reactor' or try for something more deadly- the uranium-alcohol bomb? yeah, it probably wont do much, but its fun to dream.

what evils should i inflict with my uranium? i still have to dig it out and so on, but the magma to my NW is a higher priority at the moment so i can get a smelter running. autumn of year 1, so much to do yet. so many options hehe

Build them into tightly packed columns, surrounded by steel (or any metal you wish).  Boom, nuclear reactor.

Make some water flow through them for more... "realism".

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

I don't think uranium is activated.

You kinda need to refine it first.

Not even a magma smelter should be able to do that :P

A smelter could, though. Smelters can do anything.  :P

Mod in Uranium to be smelted from pitchblende? Make it have an extremely high native temp so it explodes on creation. I'm sure there are more creative (and less suicidal) ways to mod in explosives though.

New mechanical building: Centrifuge. Uses 5000 power. Putting in ten units of pitchblende will yield one unit of enriched uranium, which can be made into a bomb at a magma forge, with adamantine for a casing.

This bomb, when activated from a lever, will destroy everything not protected by steel(or better) floodgates and raw earth.

... So, what, 50 watermills directly connected to it?

I have depleted uranium and thorium modded in.
I'll give you the code, but it also has an unrealistic alloy of both called wolfram that is epic.

I still think blowing up booze is better.

We should put Dwarven ale in our nukes.

Lol, that would make Dwarf Fortress a bit like Evil Genius.

Humans would oppose the building of a dwarven nuclear refinement facility. Evil Nuke Dwarves would be gathering up windmills and watermills for the sake of building an atomic bomb. In the final few minutes, all the humans and elves will team together to stop the dwarves from finishing the nuke ;)

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.
