Problem with the new version.
« on: August 17, 2006, 05:52:00 am »

I just downloaded the newest version of DF, and for some reason my add(+) and subtract(-) keys dont register. They simply dont do anything when pressed. I checked in both windowed and full screen mode, and it makes no difference. I checked in the key bindings menu and it's all set up correctly, and i also checked in the init/interface file and all seems okay in there. Im realy baffled as to the cause of this problem, and its seriously hindered(stopped) my playing of the game. Any help'd be appreciated.   :)

Is numpad lock on or off?

If it's off, turn it on. If it's on, turn it off. Otherwise, you may have to get a different keyboard in order to play Dwarf Fortress...

It's what i did a long time ago, when i attempted to play an old game and the keyboard i had failed to function. [Some days later the entire keyboard was dead, and impossible to use. Make sure this isn't the case with yours. Test out the numpad in the on/off position in word processors and the calculator program. Also somewhat] ironically, the one i'm using now has survived some 10 years of use, while the newer one barely survived 2.3 years. Pathetic new technology; always getting owned by the older tech...

With numlock on are you hitting the ; and / keys for - and + respectively? It seems that DF registers the keypad versions of the two keys but not the qwerty versions (I also ran into a problem of remapping the +- to ., and it wouldn't work during the fortress mode setup phase), so you'll have to turn numlock on and hit the numlocked versions of + and -.

I dont have num locked versions, im on a laptop so i dont have a keypad.   :(

Edit:

Oops, i seemed to have misunderstood the post before this one. I do have -/+ under the ; and / buttons, but with numlock on my jkl,uio etc keys would register as numbers so i have to use my function key + ; or /. This works i suppose, but it's frustrating because my actual subtract and add buttons worked prior to the download of the new version.

No, you will. If you turn on numlock on a laptop, there are a number of letter keys that have numbers and symbols, usually in another color or size than the letters. I have an IBM T42, for instance, and the 7890 are 789/, uiop is 456*, jkl; is 123-, and m./ is 0.+.

IIRC, my Apple Powerbook, the HP nx9010s here at work, and my girlfriend's Dell are all done the exact same way.

Yeah, it may be a bug. I didn't play much on my laptop before this version, but as I said, I noticed some oddities when I remapped , and . to + and -.

I went into the keybindings and reassigned the keys, instead of "-" it replaced it with "Minus" and replaced "+" with "Shift + =" Odd, but it works fine now. Thanks for the help macbony.   :)

Yeah, sorry about the confusion there -- I've swapped up the keybindings/virtual crap to try to get it to work with other keyboards, and ended up unlinking the + that is above equals and the + on the number pad to their virtual key settings.  I could go back at some point and have an option to "merge" certain bindings, like I do with some of the number-type keys, then you could use either one, if you wanted to.  I didn't want to handle the interface for that at the time...

Well, the keys work now, but everywhere it used to say "+" or "-" in green, it now says "Shift + =" and "Minus" respectively. It tends to squish words over and the green will bleed onto the next word, but it's not a big deal since i (generally) know what it should say.

If you go into data\init\interface.txt, you can play with the strings it uses.

Something like changing

[DISPLAY_STRING:SHIFT+PLUS:Shift + =]

into

[DISPLAY_STRING:SHIFT+PLUS:+]

might alleviate your problem.  If you are on the latest version all the display strings will be there, if you are on an older one you might need to add the last line yourself.
