[39f]Uneven ocean in adventure mode
« on: August 20, 2008, 06:53:37 am »

I started a 1x16 fortress (using nanofortress) which was all over the ocean apart from one tile, sso I could try and build a huge bridge over the ocean. The fortress ran perfectly, with no lag whatsoever. The ocean was something like this:
Code: [Select]
                                             XXXXXX   X = land
777777777777777777777777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
77777777777XXX7777777777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
7777777777XXXXX777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
7777777XXXXXXXXX77777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Nothing wrong with that at all, so I just played for a while...lalala...playing...dwarves are all dying of thirst...miasma from all the corpses...people are jumping into the ocean...I'm out of barrels...my brewers are dead...abandoned the fortress.

But then something bad happened.

I went back there as an adventurer, and there was nauseating lag. I managed to get further up the bridge, but then noticed that the sea was a lot lower than usual. Then I realised that the sea was now like this:
Code: [Select]
                                                   XXXXXX
                 121                      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    1112345667677XXX7777777777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
7777777777777777XXXXX777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
7777777777777XXXXXXXXX77777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

When I was searching around the bug report board, I found this - I'm not sure if it's the same problem.

You just violated the laws of physics. Please remain stationary while the Newton's laws of physics police department comes to apprehend you.

It must be a Kraken. It's always a Kraken.

You need a bigger boat. D:

Actually it looks like the ocean is draining somewhere to the left of your drawing.

I'm not sure what could cause that.

I'd laugh more if I hadn't noticed it's just a manhole opened during a flood.

Is that one from Flash Gordon?  They drained a lake in that show, I just don't remember if that's it.

It looks like it's functioning as designed to me.

The water level lowered, and left behind a trace on top of the rock outcropping.  It does that all the time.

The water level lowered

And a whole 6 feet of ocean went...where?  I wasn't aware that DF had tides.

# 000857 □ [world generation] (Report) some lakes don't have uniform water levels

I wonder if this is what's hitting you.

Good question.  But what he sees is perfectly consistent with the water lowering.  So it's not so much a matter of uneven water levels as it is a matter of random water lowering.
