Checking depot access indicates that my trade depot is wagon-accessible ONLY inside the confines of the wall I've built.  Absolutely everywhere else on the map has red-Xs.  I'm not sure why...I thought it might be the outer doors, but when I deconstructed them there was no change.  There's a way around the river so it can't be that either.

Not that it matters at all.  Upon arriving for the first time, the announcement at the bottom informed me that the humans had bypassed my site because it was inaccessible somehow.  They then proceeded to ignore their own announcement, traveled all the way to my trade depot, and unloaded their stuff.

Is this a known bug?  I know it sounds a lot like the issue where humans currently ignore roads, but I have a road...

Their caravans/wagons bypass your site.  That still means you can get the mule-driven merchants.  Not a bug.  (Though I completely misunderstood it too.)

Ah.
Well that's confusing.  Do they normally come at the same time?

Actually, if you have a sealed depot in case of sieges and you open the gates sometime before any long amount of time has passed, they'll reconsider and come trade.

I got the message with some dwarves and realized I had left my lockdown on, so I flipped the switch... Lo and behold, the mules came first and the caravans followed.

If I had a dollar for every dwarf whose feelings I didn't care about, I'd have seven dollars, with more coming in the fall.

Checking depot access indicates that my trade depot is wagon-accessible ONLY inside the confines of the wall I've built.

Do note that trade depot accessibility using the D key is checked FROM the depot TO the edge of the map, and not the other way around. This explains why the inside of your wall is green - in order to get the full caravan, you need a green path (at least 3 tiles wide) all the way from your depot to at least one map edge.

I'm not sure why...I thought it might be the outer doors, but when I deconstructed them there was no change.

Since in the 3d version you cannot build doors across a passageway 3 tiles wide, I'm betting that's your problem - somewhere along the path you have a 2-tile wide passage, and wagons can't go through.

actually 1 tile of green is enough, because green marks the middle of a three tile wide wagon-accessible path

Hmm... yeah on checking my current game, apparently, the D display only paints a single lane of green in the middle of the clear 3-tile path - I thought it displayed 3 tiles before... probably because I never make anything less than a 5- or 6-wide road to my depots.  :P
