Large gems! Large gems! More large gems!
« on: August 19, 2008, 05:29:37 pm »

So, those shrieks can be heard from my count's room. He keeps demanding this. As I understand it, large gems are created "accidentally" when cutting gems, is this right? Is there anything I can do to make my (legendary) gem cutter more likely to create them?

As he already is legendary you can do nothing to increase your chances.

The chances for large gems are dependant on the skill level of your gem cutter.

You can also import them, but to be frank the chances of a caravan arriving before your crafter goes insane is somewhat low.

In my forts, the nobles have their own personal lever for a reason :P

Err.. It's a count, asking for large gems, not a fey dwarf.

If I kill the count, will it have any effect on the future of my fortress? I'd rather kill him than having my legendary gem cutter hammered, at least.

No, and you will get another count/countess eventually.

Have fun with that.  Your best bet is to keep killing them until you find one who likes something easy like rock mugs and pig tail bags. :P

Not quite true. There are levels beyond legendary (up to legendary +5) and each level increases the chance of making large gems.

That said, it would be easier to remove the source of your problems - the count.

Or, y'know, you could keep cutting gems and try to get a large one. They're not overly rare.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I'm trying that one as we speak. I'm at about 40 cut gems and I've got one so far. My miners keep digging away..

If you've got sand just make raw green glass and cut those. No need to mine for gems that way

If you don't have sand though, then gems are a limited resource. You can't trade for uncut gems.

I started my current fort on a layer of schist, a metamorphic rock which contains lots of gems. Hell, a dwarf in my fort can't fart without hitting a cluster of gems. The cut gem count is at 230-ish. This does not count the gems I traded, which would probably bring it over 300.

And yet I think I've only seen about 10 large gems. This is with a legendary gem cutter pretty early in the fort's history too. :-/

I bet the large gem rate is affected by the cutter's personality and preferences. There's probably some 'creativity' trait that makes them more likely to make large gems. Also, if they like a particular kind of gem they may be more likely to create large gems of that type. All just speculation, of course...

I usually have 4 magma glass kilns going at all times, producing tons and tons of raw glass, which are all cut by the jewelers. The byproducts of this are a huge amount of large gems which are sold, but then they'll also put glass on everything in the fortress which makes everything all fancy and sparkly.

I like sparklies. Need more gems and metal studs on that xXXpig tail sockXXx!!!  :o

Glass never makes large gems though.
