I didn't want to make say... um... an exact "port" of the game. If I did, I'd be playing solitaire, and the game would be completely unplayable. I just wanted to catch some of the spirit of the game: it's weirdly subversive depth and complexity and complete spontaneity. For example, I might be designing the only card game with hit locations and a built-in random name generator.

But yeah, to make a carbon copy board game of DF, well, you're going to need a lot of stuff. I'm reminded when I opened the World of Warcraft board game and there was a million god damn pieces. That's not really what I want. Knowing the DF crowd, I'm certainly not afraid of making something complex, but I'd rather incorporate the things I like the most and I think are the most fun.

Hehe..I like it..Though the back should have somthing that realy symbolised dwarf fortress..Maby a pick or somthing. How would the game be played though? Maby have four race types, goblins included. You wont be able to play goblins on the field with any other races on your field other than elves, because elves are evil and obviously incourage seiges.

Here's what I'm thinking. Each player has a group of seven (or fewer) dwarves. The other players try to kill those dwarves by deploying events, monsters, and Nobles (hehe) against the other dwarves. It's a little more complicated than that, but it's a basic premise to work with.

BTW, does anyone know how to export images from the DF map archive? I want to use them as illustrations. The only way I can think of doing it is by print-screening and cropping the image, but I was wondering if there was a more efficient way of doing it. Maybe an "export" button I'm missing or something.

Make a differentiation between left-right and up-down building. When you draw an event card take the event based on your highest/lowest level; higher level will allow some creative positive events or bad events like a dwarf falling from atop of the tower; and for lower levels add more "greedy" events like discovering of mining resources or ponds and terrible events like subterranean creatures/demons in the lowest levels. Tie workshop requirements to the levels and you're done.

I love Settlers of Catan, BTW. But I haven't thought about having an actual "map". At this point, that might be a little complicated. I was planning on having fortress building somewhat abstracted. For example, if the player has a Carpenter card, it would be "assumed" that the dwarf also built an Carpenter's shop without the player having to draw a "Carpenter's shop" card. But I've thought about cards which represent locations. I definitely want an Underground River and Pits card, for example, just not their locations relative to each other.

Quote
All cards are either population, like miners or farmer or siege engineers. They form up into trees, for example, glassmakers on top of wood burners on top of wood cutters. The rest of the cards are challenges, ranging from simple things like hunger or thirst, to the more exotic like magma pipes or sieges. If you don't meet the required appropriate population, for example, soldiers to fend off a siege, some of your population is destroyed, based on how badly you failed.

That's an interesting idea. But I don't really want to abstract individuals too much. I like all of the gory detail DF has, and I don't want to lose too much of that.

What if the game was based on Nobles. You and your opponent played nobles with different traits, and could use cards to cause them to make demands or mandates, or cards to give them different likes. The nobles your opponent played would be considered your nobles and vice versa.

If you couldn't satisfy the nobles demand within 3 turns, or you violated his mandate, or you couldn't kill the noble in a bizarre and hilarious way (depending on his traits), one of your dwarves would be hammered. 7 hammerings and you lose. Which is fun.

This would tend to start off slow until many nobles were on the board, and then end violently and quick as you get steamrolled under demands.

You could take a page from the WoW TCG's raid deck concept. Decks don't have to be 'balanced' or even function with the same internal mechanics. You could set one player up as the environment, and let him wreak DF style havoc.

I like this idea a LOT. Design the game as more 'one-on-one' than 'two to a zillion players' and have them flip a coin to decide who takes the role of Environment and who takes the role of Player. Embark choice stuff goes into the player's deck, though- they have to choose a limited number of resource cards, which like in DF still need to be 'discovered' (read: drawn from the deck) but don't get discarded. Players would need to balance the convenience of having stuff like lava and chasms against the need for things like a reliable source of wood and availability of metal ore.

Now that's an interesting idea. I was a little wary of it at first, but now that I think of it, that'd solve a lot of problems, in fact, make the game a lot less cumbersome. One player concentrates on dwarves and the other concentrates on monsters and other obstacles. I think I'll run with that for now.

To be fair, I'm sure someone has already made a DF everything.

DF porn? :P

Actually, there are a lot of things DF that weren't made yet. DF bumper stickers, for one. DF movie. DF-themed cereal. A DF musicle would rock the socks off any rock band.

There's no @ in there. :) Somebody should make a cereal with tiny cabinets, anvils, floodgates and socks.
