Lava features poorly distributed
« on: August 19, 2008, 11:35:07 am »

Ever since 39f was released I have been finding it incredibly difficult to get magma features in a mountain range. When I up the number of volcanoes they just seem to cluster in one area and when I up the level of minimum volcanism I just notice an increase in the number of map rejections.

Possible suggestion:

Get DwarfHeightMap, import a nice land texture (gen a world, export the height map respecting lake bottoms) and use the same map for volcanicity (you may want to grab rainfall, temp, savagery, and drainage too).

Import back into DF and re-gen.  Takes a little work, but your volcanoes should end up in your mountains.

are magma vents meant to always reach the surface? I remember Toady talking about putting it in which caused the bottomless-pit magma bug, and I've loaded a few mountain maps with concealed vents.

Skiz: No magma vents do not always reach the surface only visable ones no revealed by the new init settings will always reach the top.

William: Ive experienced something similar. Back before the new custom world gen features when using prospector to view the site features (I like getting a good magma with sand at the minimum) I found magma will rare appeared almost everywhere. Probably about 30% chance of appearing in each individual medium map level tile.

Now I find that magma vents and pools are tightly clustered around volcanos and dont seem to find any beyound about 10 medium map level tiles.

On a side note does anyone know how to enter the draw your own map thing i heard about?

Yes.  You might want to use DwarfHeightMap instead, but if you go into advanced worldgen and hit...[e] (on the size world you wish to edit) and then [p] you'll be in the draw thingy.
