40a: Cat killing vermin in chasm
« on: August 19, 2008, 12:37:49 am »

Gday,

Found a nice location with magma, chasm underground pond/river and sand. However my cat is heading over to the chasm where the local ratman and mole population is and killing vermine, now my dwarves are gathering the refuse even with ignore outside refuse order on.

So the bug is: Chasm count as indoors for refuse gathering.

Does the chasm go to the sky above?  If no, then it's inside.  If yes, then the GROUND AROUND THE CHASM SURELY DOESN'T.

I see no bug.

I don't see a problem here.  This should be starkly obvious.  If the chasm is underground, it is 'inside'.  This is a basic game mechanic, not a bug.  Now, if this chasm is outside, then we have a problem.

Yes the chasm is outside, I guess I can accept that if theres an overhang at the ground level that whats under the overhang is inside but its going to be helluva annoying to have my dwarves travel half the map to get some refuse only to be chased to death by ratmen and moles.

*edit* Upon further examination it is infact completetly above ground have cliffs near it but absolutely nothing above it (I scrolled up to the point where the mountain tops moved away from the open chasm and the surface was just open air).

*edit* *edit* Nevermind, there was a single line of overhang which dosnt appear at any other layer which no doubt has caused the the world object to list it as indoors. Annoying cliff wall and its single line of overhang differnt to the rest of the wall.

*edit x3* For the guys below: You seem to misunderstand 1 thing I havnt breached the chasm the chasm is open to the outside my base is half a map away and they are taking there sweet time to walk all the way over there. My shortterm fix is simply forbidding the refuse each time I get a dwarf interupted by ratman annoucement.

Just dig/channel it away, and your dwarves should not collect it, as it is now mysteriously outside.  That should solve your problem.

Pretty much: anything you dig (not channel or ramp) is inside by default, due to that overhanging floor.

Can't you just mark the door leading to the chasm as pet-inaccessible and make a dual-door airlock system (the kind you should probably be using for indoor refuse piles and butcher shops)?  That would solve your issue.  Admittedly cats don't pathfind well as they will stick or dance at the doors trying to get out, but that's a different issue.
