Tactical RPGs
« on: August 18, 2008, 10:11:18 pm »

I've got an itch to play a good Tactical RPG.  I've really only played X-COM recently, but that's about it.  One of my favorite games from the Super NES days was Ogre Battle - anybody else play that?.

Does anyone have suggestions for some good ones?

Ogre Battle is great!

How do you feel about other Matsuno games? Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story?

There were also two Ogre Battle games made without Matsuno's direct contributions: Ogre Battle 64 and Tactics Ogre GBA. OB64 is very similar to Ogre Battle and is really quite excellent.

I'm not really quite what you mean by Tactical RPG tho, so I'll duck out. Check out Silent Storm?

Ogre Battle, such a great game. Well another SNES one was Live a Live. Recently retranslated by http://agtp.romhack.net/. Extremely fun with some incredible story telling. Genesis had the Shining Force series and a couple others.

Sorry can't think of any for the computer.

I've played Silent Storm; it's not very easy to find legally, but it's one of the best unappreciated games I've ever played.  Plus it's easily moddable and still has something of a community.

I would suggest Jagged Empire 1 & 2, although only the battles are tactical while the rest of the game runs real-time.  It's good, but not a pure RTS like the other games.

There are also a number of "X-Com"-based freeware games floating around.  Most are unfortunately in mid-development, and generally lack the feel of UFO/EU.  This seems the most promising, but the maps are all static and the engine doesn't easily allow destructible terrain like the original.  Still a good game though.

I heartily recommend Live-a-Live. It has perhaps the best storyline of any game on that system. The music is great as well. It's only flaw is that, while tactical, it's "tactically light", very fun and playable, but nowhere near the level of planning that X-COM requires. Some battles become "spam that move that worked last time." However, there are a huge host of characters, a lot of little storylines, and it gets better once you play them all, without spoiling it. The Chinese one is my favorite.

Ogre Battle 64/ Tactics Ogre (GBA) as before mentioned are definitely worth your time, too.

Aaah... nothing else springs to mind at the moment. I'm leaving this post for when I remember, then.

Jagged Alliance 2 comes to mind quite obviously.

Temple of Elemental Evil is a pretty combat-based RPG with turn-based tactical and a relatively faithful recreation of DnD 3.5 (or so I've heard, I wouldn't know, never played DnD).

Fallout has got a sort of turn-based tactical system, although it's a bit simple compared to the likes of JA. Think of it as of a simplified JA2.

The Realms of Arkania series feature a turn-based tactical sort of combat system.

Front Mission (on the SNES) is a an enjoyable tactical mech game with some RPG elements (leveling, inventory, customization).

I've never played Live a Live. I'll check it out!

Front Mission is awesome! FM3 is on PSX is probably my favorite but is hard to find. FM4 has a really fun plot and is an easier to find PS2 game.

I recommend Jagged Alliance over Silent Storm, actually. Do NOT buy Jagged Alliance on Steam tho! It has been broken since release and they haven't fixed it in two years. Silent Storm is intensely hard to locate, yeah, but you can have some epic, fort-leveling battles. Against Nazis. In mechatanksuits.

Recommending Silent storm also.  Just wish it didn't have a storyline and instead a Dynamic Campaign.

Another vote for Jagged Alliance 2 here.

Also, with the Wildfire disc, they released the source code, and so there are several excellent fan-created mods now available, including the Vietnam-era mod SOG '69 and what I'm playing now, JA2 1.13 (http://ja2v113.pbwiki.com/). 1.13, in its latest version, includes major revisions to the interface and inventory system (800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions), plus copious amounts of gunporn (over 3000 real-world guns, I believe, with ammo to match).

I believe most english-language mods are accessible from the Bear's Pit Forums: http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php/.

I liked Silent Storm and SS:Sentinels, but the sci-fi aspects (trying not to spoil too much) ruined it for me. I hear there's a "purist" mod that removes those parts of the game and turns it into a WWII strategy sim, but I haven't tried it out yet.

[small]edit: JA->JA2 - if you can stand the DOS-era graphics, JA 1 was also a great game[/small]

I was always a big fan of final fantasy tactics. It was also the first game I actually won. Here's my story of the final battle ( I find it myself rather funny) :
I was hitting the boss with everything I had the most powerfull, but he killed everyone but my weakest
support character. Just when it was to about die it hit the boss for 1 hitpoint... and killed him...
I was shoked.
If you will ever need fft tips Im the one to ask  ;D .

PS oh and also live a live was neat too (especially when you play a caveman :P )

Actually the SS engine was decent, because of the destructable terrain. JA2 is really missing that part.

Oh no complaints about the SS engine here. Just the storyline/tech level.

Nothing like stealthing in, identifying the building the bad guys are holed up in, planting mines on every single window and door, then shooting out a trapped window to start the chain reaction.  :D

Then again, JA2 runs decently on my crappy laptop, unlike SS, so it's great for killing time in airports and such.

Play Vandal Hearts. It was for PS1. And it kind of rocked.
