Hauling, bins, and stockpiles
« on: August 20, 2006, 12:26:00 pm »

OK, I've got a problem. I've moved all my metalworks way deeper inside the mountain to take advantage of better fuel. Originally I had my furnace etc. fairly close to the entrance (at least on the west side of the cave river, anyhow) and put my bar/block storage there. I had a bunch of bins on hand, so my dwarves started using them to store bar/block items.

Now, I've removed all my original bar/block stockpiles and designated new piles by the new metalworks. Unfortunately, the dwarves keep insisting on using the original bins in their original positions. So now all my metal bars have to be transported across the entire fortress and back every time I want to make any metal goods. I tried issuing orders to take from stockpile but they don't do any good. Am I just stuck with this huge time sink for my haulers?

stop producing until the bins are empty, then they'll be moved to furniture stockpile and redistributed.

Alternatively, de-zone your old bins, your dwarves will note that the bins are no longer in a holding zone, and move them somewhere else.

Or, set up a transfer of items from your old zone to the new one. On the new stockpile, press 't', then select the old stockpile. The bins should be moved. (Probably - I've had mixed success with this method.)

you know.. dezoning might not be good enough..

seem 1 phantom zone yesterday (or the day before)... it was a stone pile, removed it.. and moving around with q near the area will say there's a stone pile there when there isn't.. it's gone when you zone something else on top.. but it looks like once you dezone the new thing.. it was back.

don't think it applies to every zone though.. guess i just hit the jackpot

That would be great, except I've already tried de-zoning and I've already tried "take from stockpile" orders. Trying to empty the bins might work, but I'm not especially optomistic... that would take a long time and still might not work (they seem to have started using a few bar/block bins in one of the furniture piles, but they won't move them at all.)

On a sort of related note, is there a way to take items out of a bin?

I thought they were really useful at first, especially for hauling most of my finished goods to the depot in one trip, but then I discovered that I couldn't access individual items inside it and could only trade the entire bin at once.

No, you can trade individual items out of the bin.  The bin makes it much more convenient to carry a huge number of goods to the depot at once.  Once you load up the trade screen, the items inside the bin are listed with indentation right below the bin and you can pick and choose from each and every item.

Alright, I got it! I had a mason start churning out blocks, which were stuffed in the existing bar/block bins and quickly overloaded them. Then my haulers started claiming empty bins for bar/block bins, and these new bins they are actually hauling over to the new stockpiles.
