It's a lot faster for me, too. At my normal gfps setting, I'm getting at least 70% more speed than before.

Aha!  Awesome.  Whatever you did for decreasing my FPS woes, thanks!
Intros usually ran around 1-5 FPS; now it chugged along at 100.  My usual ~20 FPS (windowed) and ~12 FPS (Fullscreen) are now ~45 and ~27, respectively.  That's even with 100 dwarves (10 idle) and 24 animals.

Can you update from 39f by pasting just the init and the .exe or do you have to start over completely from scratch?
You can never update by putting the new stuff in the old folder.
Never.
You can put your old saves in the new version, but you cannot, under any circumstances, put the new version over the old version.
It just causes all sorts of wonkiness.
I've got nothing on plant/animal reactions anymore.
The old method using the materials with numbers from the item tokens wiki page no longer works.
Just using the animal/plant in the matgloss section didn't work either.
Gah, Toady, we need documentation.

So is it just a fluke that my DF folder was created back in the 2D days and I've always every just unzipped everything over what used to be there, yet never had a problem (NOT counting the time only 14 of the 300-something savegame files didn't copy correctly from a backup once)

You are lucky my friend, have you ever considered trying the lottery, because you are just that lucky.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

(*) added forbid-on-death orders for your corpses, other non-hunted corpses, your items and other items
(*) added forbid order for fired projectiles
(*) made dwarves prefer to combine items in existing bags/barrels/bins with init options to govern this behavior

My 3 longest standing issues with df, all fixed in only 1 release!

(*) added note-taking ability for embark screen

What does this mean?

Is the new version compatible with 39f saves by the way?

i had really smooth fps until the dwarven caravan showed up, and things turned really chuggy.
dont know if it had to do anything with the guy who was supposed to hold a meeting with the dwarves, was unconscious.
the result was that the caravan-meeting-guy just stood and waited by my dwarf for like forever.
once the caravan left the fps instantly went up again.

As an added bonus this new version is spectacularly less demanding on my video card, in addition to the much higher FPS. My GPU temps are now at 62C (barely above idle for this card) with 50% fan instead of 80C with 100% fan.

Super awesome work, Toady!

Serious problem. Fullscreen does not work anymore.

It gets all wonky and anything that already got rendered stays there blah blah blah. Basically it's unplayable. But windowed is perfectly fine and the old version still works. Help.

Wow.  Sounds like my CPU.
It idles at 60 but gets up to 70 before the fan really kicks in...  I have yet to see the fan get to 100% though (it REALLY roars when it goes at full speed...  sounds like a jet taking off/landing)

Dang Toady! Starting FPS on my dual core Turion lappy running Wine went thermonuclear, from an average ~150 FPS on a two level 4x4 starting fort to an I-must-throttle-this-before-seizure-commences ~400+ FPS! In full screen 1440x900. Twitch.
