Smashed Houses?
« on: August 18, 2008, 06:48:58 am »

Ok so I am doing a character who I never use the Travel map at all and has to walk everywhere. Anyway i stumble across a village that has plenty of normal houses. Only one of these houses has 2 semi walls that don't connect to anything. Just like a house but with no roof and the floor is all sand. There is no furniture. Has anyone else ever seen anyhting like this. I don't think it was a glitch. Was it a megabeast or were the humans building a house at the time? Could this be linked in with where a leader will say 'Cyclops killed children and destroyed buildings'?

Edit: I have just found another example on a different Character

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

I'm fairly certain this is the game's way of showing a destroyed house..  not what I would expect, but yes, megabeasts can destroy houses.

Congratulations, you just found a set of ruins.

No one lives there, it was destroyed and/or abandoned during world gen.

A lot of them populate still-active towns that have had some run-ins with the baddies during gen.  The towns that didn't make it are nothing but ruins, but, sometimes you'll find a nice thriving city with a slummy looking section in ruins.  Great for squatting!

It would be fun to rebuild these when adventurer skill are in.

I started a fort in a ruined town and have rebuilt the mead hall, a shop, an underground house, and added another floor and a half to the keep  (the only intact building when I arrived).  I dismantled a lot of constructions when I arrived, which turned out dangerous; world-gen humans were capable of building floors on top of walls which will collapse and kill you.  The ruined temple is nice and overgrown, but the masterful engravings added enough to my value to get me an ambush in the first winter.

My first non-abstract engraving was of the original founding of the town some 600 years in the past, shortly followed by and engraving of it's final destruction.

Hi!

Actually, there is something I have been wondering about ever since I first saw it in adventurer mode: What will they do if they run out of space?

I mean, if you don't allow megabeast abort, you can gen a world of 2000 or more years without trouble. If you have a lot of caves and civs, you will get a lot of building destructions (giants like to destroy buildings a lot, it seems). If all these ruins stay there, won't a town run out of building space eventually?

I guess that is one more thing I really should check when 40b comes out.

What do you mean by Adventure Skills?

Hi!

I assume he meant when adventurers can do various things like all the dwarven jobs from fortress mode besides climbing and other things.

So, there is hope that adventurers may eventually be able to (re)build houses and the like.

At least that is what I remember.
