So... what do I need to insert to get this to work? I just started this today but I don't know shiznet about DF modding besides that the RAWS need to be edited.

The aim: free food from the smelters.

I think you need to add it to MatGloss reactions, or something like that. It's where all of the metal reactions are stored, like gold nuggets to gold bars, and bronze, etc.

A little more info.

I've got this to show up on the smelters in game. It's just that when I smelt these, nothing happens. No plump helmets from the plump helmet reaction. :-(

You might need to have a [REAGENT] tag in there, even if you leave it blank.

So,

Free wood and adamantine work fine w/o regent tags though but...

Well, it seems to be producing one type of herb. Rat weed seems to be popular. More tuning necessary. -_-* Back after more tuning and fuddling with DF raws.

It's because of how the raws work. Try [PRODUCT:100:1:PLANT_NO_SUBTYPE:WOOD:SAGUARO]

That only does the same thing as producing Oak logs.

No go. The only thing that gets produced on any of the options is Rat Weed. O.o

I was pondering how to respond to that when I noticed a tiny little asterisk on my p key. It was obviously intended. After a little experimentation I learned that I could make all sorts of unusual symbols by pressing alt + some key. Except the Q key, of course, that's the same old boring @.

Anyway, I'm intrigued by this..  I never could get plant reactions to work right...
It's something to do with the second-to-last section of the product line needing to be the material with the same number as the number of the plant you want in the raws.
See item tokens for the numbers and their equivalents, see your raws to count out which material you need.
Should end up:
[PRODUCT:100:1:PLANT:NO_SUBTYPE:PEARL:NO_MATGLOSS] or something similar.  Bold is the specific part you need to change.

Same thing applies for animals.
For instance, [PRODUCT:100:1:SHELL:NO_SUBTYPE:SHELL:NO_MATGLOSS] produces mule shells, since mules are the 10th animal in the raws and SHELL is listed at #10 in Item Tokens: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Item_tokens

You can also make vermin using a similar system, but the turtles I smelted don't drop shells for some dumb reason.
