[39f] Dwarves sleeping through giving birth
« on: August 16, 2008, 06:45:25 pm »

So every once in a while a sleeping dwarf pops out a baby and continues to sleep soundly. The baby then crawls off until the mother eventually wakes up and fetches it. I'm assuming that the babies are looking for a cliff to jump off of from looking at the wiki, but i haven't seen one jump yet (some got dangerously close though). I don't really want any baby deaths in my fortress, especially since everyone has a bunch of stats.

Also i don't think childbirth is really something you can sleep through without drugs.

Basically i think dwarves should wake up when they give birth. They already stop eating or drinking to retrieve their kids.

EDIT: Oh, looks like babies just crawl to the nearest meeting area.

Heh, it's interesting how nonchalant dwarves are about childbirth in general. I suppose ideally, childbirth should be more of an event than it is now, with behavior more similar to strange moods. I.e. "Bromek McDwarf cancels whatevershewasdoingbefore: childbirth" followed by the dwarf running of to her bedroom - or, lacking one, claiming any bed she can reach - and then entering the childbirth stage, which takes a while and is not entirely risk-free. Any dwarf with the "health care" labor activated will rush to her aid and give her a hand. With a bed and a decent nurse, the birth should usually go well with no complications. Without either, the odds are slightly worse. If the mother is wounded beforehand, even more so. Bad outcomes would include the death of the child and/or mother. Similar behavior for animals, except other locations (kennel? animal pit?) and the "animal caretaking" skill. And probably much less risk of complications, in general.

Theres an idea, but no thanks. If you put that in even wild animals would have complicated births. Most wild animals have very simple births.

I'm ok with dwarves being nonchalant, but at least wake up for Armok's sake. Your baby's getting away.

There's been a suggestion thread or two on this sort of thing.  Dunno when I'll get around to it.

Let Toady decide.  I don't see this as too much of an issue right now.  Weird, but not game breaking.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

I'd call having the power to sleep through something as significant as birth a game breaking issue.

Besides, I heard there's a wake up tag attached to certain events like being attacked. Can't that wake up tag be placed on the birth event?

That's hardly what "game-breaking" means, though.

It's just one of *many* quirky things about DF. It doesn't really negatively affect your game at all. A lack of a feature you want is not "game-breaking". Your dwarves bursting into flames when giving birth would be a little closer to the term.

My dwarfs do burst into flames while giving birth. Perfectly normal. Even us humans do it.
