Input lag in new versions?
« on: August 16, 2008, 10:17:04 am »

In version 38c, I remember running a fortress of about 80 dwarves. My computer isn't the best, so FPS would sometimes drop to around, say, 14, but other than that, everything ran fine.

In the current version, however (39f as of this post), for some reason, the game likes to give me input lag. You know, the sort where sometimes a keypress is responded to virtually instantaneously and sometimes there's a noticeable lag, resulting in it being difficult to do something like switching z-levels without jumping two or three instead of only one.

This happened a little bit on my current fort when the first caravan appeared. Keep in mind my current fortress shouldn't (in my opinion) be much more CPU-hogging at all than the one I mentioned before in 38c, considering that I currently only have 18 dwarves, and far fewer animals, and the same or fewer amount of z-levels.

This also happened on another map which was running with a high FPS due to there being a very flat landscape and no flows, until I turned the FPS cap down.

Has anything changed recently to cause this? I never had this sort of problem before.

This might help.

Find [KEY_HOLD_MS:150] in your \data\init\init.txt file

Change it to [KEY_HOLD_MS:300]

Reload DF, see if it helps.  The level changing gets "duplicated" due to the key hold timer for some reason.  Might not help with the keypress lag, but it'll stop the double strokes.

pathfinding can cause the game to slow real bad when dwarves try to go through the same narrow choke point, it might be those times that cause the lag
