Songs that sum up dwarf fortress for you
« on: August 15, 2008, 10:16:04 pm »

Songs that remind you of dwarf fortress the most.
Honestly for me its the immigrant song by led zeppelin:

A-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow

The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new land
To fight the horde and sing and cry, Valhalla, I am coming

On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore

Ah-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow

How soft your fields, so green
can whisper tales of gore, of how we calmed the tides of war
We are your overlords

On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore

S-so now you better stop and rebuild all your ruins
for peace and trust can winthe day despite of all you're losin'
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ahh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

Is it bad that I hear the hi-ho hi-ho mining song from snow white when my legendary dwarves are digging up ore veins?

Ever since I started playing Dwarf Fortress whenever I hear Rainy Day Women  12 & 35 by Bob Dylan I think of my poor little dwarfs hauling stones. "Stoned " as in interrupted to haul stones instead of doing more important things like admiring a fine trap or complaining about the lack of work

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good,
They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home.
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to keep your seat.
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' on the floor.
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' to the door.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table.
They'll stone ya when you are young and able.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to make a buck.
They'll stone ya and then they'll say, "good luck."
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you and say that it's the end.
Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again.
They'll stone you when you're riding in your car.
They'll stone you when you're playing your guitar.
Yes, but I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you when you walk all alone.
They'll stone you when you are walking home.
They'll stone you and then say you are brave.
They'll stone you when you are set down in your grave.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

EDIT: Heh  :D the lyrics page for the song  even says:

"Copyright ©1966; renewed 1994 Dwarf Music"

No surprise I guess since Dwarf Music was Dylans song publishing company but still :)

Rainbow - Hall of the Mountain King

Mysteries of ages told, stories now will unfold
Tales of mystic days of old are hidden in these walls
Hear the witches play their tunes, sing their songs to the moon
As they play the night will move, in the hall of the mountain king

Wild child so innocent
You took that away

Thoughts of wonder and surprise hide themselves in your eyes
As the smoke begins to rise inside the mountain halls
Ancient tales of witches love, answers lie through that door
All you'd ever want and more, is calling for you now

Through darkened passages
Try but you cannot break free
You took her innocence
Now you will answer to me
I am the mountain king
Are you not afraid? I am the mountain king
Listen to the bells

In a midnight fantasy, more than any eye can see
Hear them laughing crazily, It's out of control
Mysteries of ages told, stories now will unfold
Tales of mystic days of old are hidden in these walls

Through darkend passages
Run but you cannot escape
You took her innocence
And for this crime you must pay
I am the mountain king, are you not afraid?
I am the mountain king

Anything by Manowar.
Especially the song "Hymn of the immortal warriors"
That song is awesome.

A hero was he
Touching all our lives
As if he lived and died
In a single moment

Great were his deeds
All his words were true
He lived and died
A man of honor

He paid with his life
For his life was the price
To pass the gates immortal

Thy journey begins
With sword in the wind
Stay thy hand rest thy command
For Odin's call was heard above them all
Thy name shall never die!

Long shall we remember
He who walked the road of danger
Master of revenge
Death's no stranger

Blood and death lived on his sword
The god of war his only lord
Into the depths of hell
Go all he fell

Take thy shield take thy sword
All thy weapons to the sky
Ye shall need them when Odin bid thee rise

For none but the brave
Shall rise up from the grave
To see the Valkyries fly

And so it was by the hand of Odin
Did the immortal warrior pass through
The gates of Valhalla and into legend.

Rise brother rise pass Valhalla's gates
Here great warriors await

Reborn from thy steel
All thy wounds be healed

From the earth to the sky
Now the son of Odin rise!

Take thy place among the kings
For thy soul shall never die!

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

I don't see what a game about teleportation set in a futuristic laboratory has to do with dwarves.
By the way, the song is written by Jonathan Coulton and sung by Ellen McLain.

Trot Out the Dead by Hammers of Misfortune would be a good one, but it doesn't as much sum up Dwarf Fortress itself as much as the way I(And everyone else?) play the game.
Fool, I am no hero
So leave my casket be
Furthermore I'd never give my life
for such as thee

If the people wonder at the suffering you've caused
And your massive avarice has left them at a loss
If by chance they notice your bloody snapping jaws
the blood upon your claws
your shifty eyes and laws
the nauseating flaws in all you've said
Trot out the dead
Trot out the dead

If by chance they give you the slightest bit of grief
Or perhaps they notice you're a liar and a thief
If they dare to question your lunatic beliefs
The wicked web you weave
The slimy trail you leave
Or maybe they perceive they've been misled
Trot out the dead
Trot out the dead

Trot out the dead, trot out the dead
Fire up the burning pole while you're ahead
Blot out the truth, trot out the lies
Myriad eyes
Silence the wise
Shackle the skies
Stifle the cries of the soon to be dead

If the people wonder why so many had to die
Or they test the wisdom in your prevailing lie
Or how you let it happen when you knew it all the time
and you just let them fly
it's in your evil eye
the way they were betrayed the day they died
Trot out the dead
Trot out the lies

Whenever I hear it I see dwarves being dropped into execution pits and "accidentally" being smashed by drawbridges.

How I Could Just Kill a Dwarf, by Cypress Hill (and excellently covered by Rage)

Since we're basically just suggesting song names that could in some way be related to DF, how about rage's "No Shelter" (for above ground fortresses), "Sleep Now In The Fire" (that's pretty much what happens when my magma works go wrong).

Radiohead's "How To Disappear Completely" when I atom-smash elves (or conversely, drop them into a pit). "Fake Towercap Trees". "Bowgoblin Proof... I wish I was". "A Dragon at the Door" is also pretty good. "Babysnatchers", off their new album... "Nude" is what generally happens after a couple of years of garment-rottage.

etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Honestly the song I like to listen to when playing DF is the original Sim City 3000 theme (you must know it- everyone knows it). It's so industrious...
