Huh? But in a 0-friction instance a ball doesn't actually roll... ever.

What?

You mean the ball doesn't stop for ever, right?
The absence of friction does not mean the absence of gravity.

Well, the ball rolls because friction causes the bottom to move more slowly (less quickly?) than the top of the ball, so in frictionlessland, you'd just have a sliding sphere.

EDIT: REASONABLEMAN recovers from PHYSICS QUANDARY!
Wait, what in the world does this have to do with Spore?!

yeh the inertia of the ball causes it to spin because the bottom cant slide so the top part carries foward with more force rolling it.

Nothing, apparently. I've tried to reroute or halt the discussion, but I suppose I could just as well try to stop a runaway TGV with a Flintstone brake.

Anyway, yes, a magnarotor (as I ended up calling it, because "permanent magnet motor" is plain too long) is supposed to output torque on an axis. I've read about numerous attempts at this kinda device, so I figured I'd see if I can devise a better one.

wtf are you talking about 14 days??? its been going for months.
Look at his post. He mentions a google search. Maybe you should look for it, and find what the creator says, instead of refusing to believe anything he says.

Anyway, yes, a magnarotor is supposed to output torque on an axis.

And just where exactly is the energy for that supposed to come from?

How about "permagmo"? ;D

According to what I found she said it on his behalf. Given that the source for it is a completely credulous PMM/free energy nonsense wiki, I'm inclined to believe the rather underwhelming figure.

Well then one of them is either mistaken or lying, and personally I don't really care which since a month is still nowhere near perpetual motion anyway. If your perpetual motion machine stops, ever, then it isn't.

There are grandfather clocks that last more than a month... I guess they are PMM.

Well, I finished my mod for Spore. Now instead of there being one space empire for every 17 planets in the GALAXY, there are only one for every 400! Finally some peace and quiet!

Naturally, I also use the my spicehax mod that makes even the weakest planet produce one or two spice a minute instead of per hour.

Micro102:

Earlier you said that you could use gravity to make something that can move forever but that wouldn't make "a good power supply".

I think you're mistaken. It would make a power supply at ALL.

Even if, under literally ideal circumstances, you make some system that can move forever, you will never be able to keep it moving forever if you draw any kind of energy from it.

And yeah, a month isn't exactly an infinite amount of time. The Sun's been going for a hell of a lot longer and that isn't going to last forever either.

what do you mean it wont be a pwer supply at all? if the energy you take from it it less then the energy given to it by the endless free energy of gravity and magnets then you get energy.

endless...free energy...?

what?

I spaced out on this whole discussion because it seemed to involve ZPE and glue.
