Immobile creatures moving? need help.
« on: August 15, 2008, 08:50:17 am »

Spoiler: creature code (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: body code (click to show/hide)

As you can see by the code, I'm trying to make a living predatory plant that is immobile on land.
Problem is, it moves, quite quickly actually, even though i gave it the [SESSILE_LAND] tag.

I checked the error log and got this: Unrecognized Creature Token: SESSILE_LAND

Is this an invalid tag now? If so, what can I use to make this creature immobile?

[IMMOBILE_LAND]

Is the correct tag now.  Same thing basically, new name.

It's a Wiki - if you see something that needs changing, you can always change it. :)

I'm fairly certain [SESSILE_LAND] is just obsolete.  Probably just figured he would just clear up the wording.

I know I never knew what "Sessile" meant until I modded DF.  Thanks to the wiki I figured it out, but immobile land is more understandable for somebody without a dictionary handy.

If the game doesn't recognize it as a valid token, it's probably obsolete. ;)

OK, well I put in the new tag. the game doesn't complain about it, but it does not work, the VMT's still run around at incredible speeds, instead of being rooted to the ground.

This is getting a little annoying

Two options that come to mind:

1. The body part with the [STANCE] token is what causes it to move, so if you remove the [STANCE] token from the PLANT entry in the body raws, it won't move, but it won't be able to stand up, either... I'm not sure if it's able to attack when it falls over, I never got my legless abominations to fight back.

2. Give it a really low speed, so it CAN move, but absurdly slowly. ...and by "low," I mean "high." As in [SPEED:1000000]. The higher the number, the slower the creature; there's an article on the wiki that explains why. Default is about 900, which is about as fast as a dwarf. The number I gave you should make it move one square for every thousand or so dwarf movements. Make it higher if that's not slow enough.

well with #1, there is currently no [STANCE] tags on any of the roots, and it is still deadly as all hell and moves.

#2,  I tried the speed thing but it makes them unable to attack before they are brutily slaughtered.

I've uploaded a video showing you that they still defy me.

The problem with that is that dwarf fortress has a limited speed amounts. So if you set a creature to move to slow, it says that the number has reached the minimum and resets it to the highest. This means that if you set the speed to something huge, like 1000000, you may end up with a creature that moves the same as a creature with speed 800. It also works the same way with incredibly fast speeds, with one the speed counter reaches the extreme lows, you ending up with creatures who are slower than the creatures with not quite so extreme lows.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Would I be able to see your PLANT body code, as if your plants are using mine, they still move around. I think I screwed something up in the body and its interfering with everything else.
