[39f] Loading a saved game crashes pc
« on: August 14, 2008, 11:27:56 am »

So recently i downloaded Dwarf fortress, and i've been playing a while, learning the basics. Until i felt that i could try starting a serious fortress, firstly i saved the game, after looking where to install my fortress and making the preparations, and i had no problem loading, but after a while, i had to leave a moment, so i saved and closed the game, i had done a few things already. When i came back, i loaded the game, and after selecting which file, it crashed my pc with the blue screen of death D: (i tried loading the same file 3 times, and all resulted in a crash. And i didn't die in any of the previous games, i only killed a dwarf  :D )

i started a new fortress again, i did the same as the last one, and it crashed too.

Any ideas? ???  I have 512MB ram

Oh, and when i created the world, after it generated all the events though the years, it lagged my pc, i couldn't do anything until it ended. Is it my pc or the game?

thanks  :)

Are you using Windows XP? A BSOD is pretty dang rare in XP and might be related to corrupted direct-X or video card drivers. Hell, even your sound drivers could be causing it if they got corrupted. I'd check them out first, using start->run 'dxdiag' and running through the direct-draw and direct-sound tests. Try getting the latest drivers for your motherboard/soundcard/videocard, this is the easiest way to fix most problems imo.

DF also uses OpenGL, so I don't really know if the above things are even applicable.

yes, i use XP, and i get BSOD too sometimes, when i'm going to close the pc, when its closing the aplications, it crashes in BSOD...

i updated my videocard controllers before and it didn't work, but i'll try now updating the rest, thanks, i'll post how it goes

Holy crap you play DF on a comp with a 1.3 GHZ processor?  :o
Erm I suppose you must have some heavy lag and like zero FPS when temperature etc. turned on and the fortress is pretty big?

Dont forget to check out your processor's temperature btw, if the proc is overheated, it can cause BSOD, but it can be a memory related error also.

Actually it goes pretty fine, but i've only had 7 dwarves for the moment, so maybe i'll get more lag then... and adventure mode goes laggy, dunno fps, haven't got it activated. And temperature i think its activated and i have no problems btw. and i have my pc opened, i think it's not a temperature issue...

my motherboard seems to be outdated, really outdated, i have a K7S5A from ECS, i've looked for drivers on their webpage, and there are only for the pro version ???

i made the tests of directdraw and direct-sound by dxdiag, and there seems to be no problems, and i havent upgraded the drivers of the soundcard... (it sais i have a WDM type, and in the webpage i can't find anything WDM related... outdated too?  :o )

the only thing i could upgrade by far has been the graphics card... this is annoying, fucking pc

I've got 1.6 GHz and run pretty good up until around 80 dwarves.  Tend to embark small though.

You should test your CPU with 100% load for like 15-30 minutes. If there wont be a problem, your hardware should be ok.

Use Prime95 that allows maximum stress testing on the CPU and RAM. There are several options allowing the stress test to focus on the memory, processor, or a balance of both.
Also while your CPU is at 100% load check the temperature of the processor [Wait for like 10-15 minutes while @ 100% load and check the temperature again] You can find various utilities for this on the net. :)
Actually you can skip the "check temperature" part, since if your system wont be stable at 100% load, your comp will have a BSOD, or it will shut down, or you will see some error message and crash will happen.
Dont worry, this process wont hurt your system, its just a stability test.

okay so i downloaded prime95 and used the "Blend Torture test" for 30 minuts and this is what i got:

 ??? ??? ???

Did i execute the correct test?

Oh and btw, when i get a BSOD, in the end where the error shows it displays my soundcard, i think, maybe that's the problem, but i can't update it because it seems it's too old  :-\ Is there any kind of DB with old drivers update? But i'm still not pretty sure about this

Thanks  ;D

Okay it looks like that your CPU + RAM is stable enough + overheating is also not an issue  :)
Yeah even a soundcard can cause system errors, is it an onboard soundcard? If it is, disable it, and buy some new card and test with that. If it is not onboard, replace it.
