Traps are for weaklings!
So's survival?

Yes, yes it is
well if you can't survive without traps it is, The're so overpowered that it's more fun to train a military and focus on pressing your defencive advantage. Remeber losing is fun. Losing because an insanely powerful goblin who's probably like the Samson of the goblins tore your base to sheds single-handedly is totally awesome. It's time to have your military defend itself to the end and shout "This is PLAYPAPERS".

Your only hope is to wear him down.  Get your animals to breed like mad, and then launch all of them on him at the same time.  Preferably on top of him, as that will prevent him from getting up before the ones sitting on him get killed.

If you can get him to over-exert himself, you've won.  But you need to strike hard, and strike fast, because supergoblinly tough means that he'll be back at full force in a few minutes.

That is actually what I was going to do, I have a cage with 40 wardogs in it connected to a lever. My other champion has managed to heal so I now have a little bit of hope for when Stozu comes around next. In other slightly unrelated news, a dragon came to playpapers and nearly destroyed the remaining army of recruits. Luckily I used a sacrificial technique and gave them all spears hoping that they might be able to puncture a vital spot before their death. It worked quite well and I now know an army of spear wielding recruits is quite useful if you are prepared for losses.

The third siege.

"Siege!" The cry echoed out across the fortress. The masons working atop the keep had spotted Stozu the legendary goblin. With him was his greatest force ever. There were at least a hundred goblins lead by six weapon masters. Again I ordered for civilians inside, warriors at the gate house and marksdwarves on the wall.

The goblins marched on to the entrance of Playpapers. The first squad to enter was a marksgoblin squad, lead by a bow master. They proceeded along the road until they came into range of our marksdwarves. The two sides fired as many bolts and arrows at each other as they could but in the end my outnumbered marksdwarves were all shot down. Behind the marksgoblins were the bulk of the army who now had a safe path to where my two champions and a couple of wrestlers were waiting.

The goblin army moved with surprising speed. With-in a few seconds the dwarven warriors were surrounded and outnumbered. The goblins headed by a bow master and a swords master attacked viciously but the dwarven strength was too much for them and they were held off. After several minutes of fighting the dwarves were exhausted but they had done well. They killed both weaponmasters and about 10 goblins with only one casualty on their side. Then another squad of goblins rounded the corner, this time however the champions were not so lucky and had to face a full squad of marksgoblins. The marksgoblins emptied their quivers on the champions, slaughtering them and leaving their bodies as pincushions.

There were now no full time warriors left to defend Playpapers. We were in deep shit. From there I did the only thing I could think off, I ordered all miners out to confront the goblins. The two legendary miners went out to defend playpapers from the goblin menace. However they made a devastating mistake. They attacked the regrouped goblins one at a time! Out ran both miners however one of them (The Mayor of Playpapers) decided it was time for lunch so he ran back inside the keep. The other miner rushed the goblins and was ganged up on by three weapon masters, Stozu and 50 others. He was of coarse torn to bits.

Lead by Stozu, the goblins now advanced to the keep. Upon its breach, I ordered everyone in Playpapers into a militia. They were to group on the central staircase to defend Playpapers or die trying. The militia formed up, 40 untrained dwarves and one trained guard grouped together on the ground level. They were attacked from all angles, losing dwarves at a constant rate. They were fighting a losing battle. Eventually our numbers were whittled down to just three recruits. These three recruits however turned the tide of the battle and managed to force the goblins into a retreat. We were victorious. For the third time, the dwarves at Playpapers successfully beat back Stozu and his army. However there was no time for celebration, we knew Stozu would be back eventually. We remaining 6 dwarves have a lot of work to do to prepare for his return.

Sorry for the lack of Legendary goblins in this post. It seems that Stozu took a back seat in this siege. He let all of his minions do the dirty work and then came in afterwards to kill the children.

Before i rant and rave at how supremely awsome it is that there is such a goblin that can destroy a fortress, i just must venture that anyone who is turned on by the ASCII immage of a female Elf is utterly devoid of human contact, and should get a girlfriend or die trying...
Why didn't you release the dogs that last time? i'll bet nobody can beat 40 war dogs...

Well, if she's from a goblin civ, you could disguise yourself as a child and try to get her to kidnap you.  Then instead of dismemberment she'd haul you back home and *cough cough* assimilate you.
I was going to make a witty reply to this, but then I saw the post above me and realised that SHOCK HORROR, THINKING ABOUT SEX MEANS YOU HAVE NO LIFE?! THE PORN INDUSTRY MUST BE MASS MURDERERS!

Awesome to see something like this in the vanilla game. It is quite easy to find asskicker goblins like these with a modded game, but not with the vanilla.  8)

This is why the game is sooo much more fun without the overpowered traps.  Weapons and cage traps need some severe fixing, and enough gobllins should be able to batter down a door.  Enough trolls should be able to smash through walls.  And someday, ladders and improvised bridges in sieges.

I noticed a fairly large pool of magma there. Perhaps the Incinerated Stigmas could be lured into the bowels of the fort while a lone miner does the dirty work? Scorched Earth Policy!
It be cool if he survived that!

I once imagined that after a couple of sieges, the gobbos would show up with miners and picks.

No-no-no, traps are overpowered and just plain indecent in this situation ;D Including more complex traps with flowing lava and such. We know too well that even a single dwarf can kill unlimited goblins with e.g. retracting bridges over lava pool.
Goblins fight valiantly in an exclusively military style, so dwarves should match them on the battlefield if they want to boast this victory in future! Or die trying...

I agree totally. However now that I modded my game, I must use some traps...my goblins are quite nasty.  ;D
I am trying to balance the traps vs military action situation...its not easy. If you dont use traps/def. mechanisms bigger sieges can depopulate your fortress even in the vanilla game.
Yeah I think once Toady will implent the combat arc etc. we might end up with awesome sieges. There were lot of suggestions in this topic anyway, I am pretty sure that Toady knows about them. [special units in battles to spot/disable traps, construct bridges over moats, tunnellers etc.]
