Made a barony and then a county a month later
« on: August 12, 2008, 07:02:51 pm »

Maybe not even a month.

Basically it's like the title says.  I was cruising along making things with 89 dwarves.  Baronness arrives with her entourage, ok fine.  I immediately assign her a pleasant room and tomb and la-dee-da.

Less than a month later, I get "Whatever and the surrounding lands have been made a county".  What?  Is that possible?  It hasn't even been a season.  Now the rooms suddenly aren't good enough for the nobles and bleeeeeegh.

Anyway has this happened to anyone else?

Hm... Your rank up apparently coincided with the migration wave. Then again, I've never managed to attract nobles.

Well, the nobles I attracted wasted no time in doing their thing, which in this case seems to mostly be requesting items that I can't make.

It was an odd occurance to get both promotions at once, but nothing different in the long run.

afaik the baron upgrades based only on fort population, so the rest of the immigration wave you got him in must have put you over the limit to get a county.

Yes it is a little silly I guess, but considering the barony/county/whatever doesn't actually do anything or have a population at all right now it's not really a big deal.

Well, the barony starts economy, and the county ups every noble's demands for quarters and offices and the like.

But yeah, no big deal anyway to be honest.

I can one-up this.

My last fort had a baron arrive who was immediately promoted to a count.

The announcement panel went something like:

"Walking Depths and the surrounding lands have been made into a Barony!
Baron Urist McDwarfy has arrived!
Walking Depths and the surrounding lands have been made into a County!
Baron Urist McDwarfy has become a Count!"

I hadn't even finished his rooms, yet, and they're already subpar! :D

yeah, ^that^ happened to me in my first real fortress as well.  It's actually kind of distressing.

Seriously. How many times do I have to tell you, there is no adamantite anywhere in our land, and the traders wont bring it, so it's not gonna happen Count!

Interestingly in my latest fort I got Baron/Duke/Count but then my Count died (for no reason I could tell, I think perhaps he went insane and I missed it). His Countess Consort survived though, and for a while I thought she would rule in his stead... but next season, another Count and Countess arrived, which means I now have two Countess Consorts demanding stupid electrum cabinets in their tombs and crap.

Kill the other countess.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Kill both contesses. And the count, while you're at it.

Beat me to it.

Just kill any noble that starts requesting stupid things, how about that?

So, nobles don't actually confer any benefits?

BAAAhahahahaha

Just like in reality, no, the aristocracy confers absolutely no benefit. They exist only to leech resources away from the people and eventually destabilize the society when they get too far out of hand.

That's too bad. It seems like nobles should have some effect, such as on diplomacy between civilizations and races, morale of dwarves, perhaps chance of migrants, or something...

I don't kill nobles.  I prefer to make it at least semi-reasonable as a story.  If nobles just kept 'mysteriously' dying in a fort, the leaders would be in chains immediately and put to death.

Anyway, the twits are asking for electrum, large gems, and rose gold.  I have no gold and no silver on the map, and large gems are hard to come by.

But hey, there you go.  I try to do the demands that are possible, and just sadly ignore the ones that aren't.
