I found a ettin cave near a dwarven civ filled with the usual trinkets. Except for one important fact: most of them were actually made of valuable materials. Plenty of crafts made out of gemstones and actual metal crowns and scepters.

Usually caves near dwarf civs just have stone goods in them along with the usual bone and leather items. This one had things made out of metal, gems and silk in addition. There were a couple of funny bituminous coal idols though.

Has anyone else ever found loot made of materials which are actually valuable?

I once found a gobbo master lasher guarding a Large , but it was not in trinket form and was on the ground. Other than that, one copper crown.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Oh yes, gold/native gold, lots of gems of different kinds, silver, native silver, and lots of things encrusted with valuable spikes/rings.  i guess it just depends on how lucky the civ that they were stealing from has been in choosing their starting location.

This particular cave had platinum, aluminum, gold, silver, black bronze, rose gold, heck any metal really. And tons of large gems and gem crafts. -Star sapphire crown- for one. +Yellow diamond idol+ for another. Also native gold/platinum goods. And giant cave spider silk earrings. I totally embarked a fortress with that civ afterwards.  :D

With one goblin adventurer I found a star sapphire earring, a native gold amulet with a rose gold star image-thingy on it, a crossbow decorated with mussel pearl, and a shield with an image of me striking down a child. I think I had an alder bow with an image of a chimera on it, and I got a maul with images of carp on it in bloodstone.

I miss my swordgoblin. He's as close as I've gotten to uber-adventurer.

I found a cave where all of the loot was food.  Just bits of meat and some plants scattered all over the place.  Weird.

In the cave I embarked over, there's about 20 large gems littered around the place. Pity I can't get to them-There's a giant which has killed 61 people, most of them the leaders of a human civ, which keep coming, and failing, to kill the thing. If the npcs ever take quests during fortress mode, it would be cool to watch the giant kill the current leader and his succesor.
