So long as my year is siege-less, my Sky-Go-Boom lever shall be complete and you'll have a one-shot-one-siege-killed :) If it works right and I have enough time and rocks/rock blocks

if theres one thing dwarves love to hate, its rock
it makes shelter
it clutters the floor
it makes blocks
the blocks clutter the floor
you make statues
the statues clutter the floor, both built and tipped over!
you mine out ores! joy!
you make storage space
the rock clutters the floor
you make doors, the doors need rooms that will have rocks in them...
that will need a .... well you get the picture

Or, build something huge and unnecessary out of stone outside.

"We've struck gold!"  Ushat the miner said, bursting into Zefon's study, covered in gray diorite dust.  "We've got raw gold!"

"Wonderful!" said Zefon, putting down her cup of tea.  "What are you going to do with it?"

"What do you mean?  We're going to mine it all out, of course."

"But what are you going to do with it afterwards?"

"Me?"  Ushat scratches her head, sending up small clouds of diorite.  "I'm not going to do anything with it.  I'm just a miner."

"Not anymore.  You're now the administrator of the fort.  It's your year, go have fun!"  Zefon picked up a pile of papers and began making notes on them, obviously done with Ushat.  The miner blinks, stares at Zefon for a moment, then when it became clear that Zefon was engrossed in her paperwork and wasn't going to say anything else Ushat slowly turned around and left, closing the office door behind her.

Journal of Miner Ushat Keskarul - Spring of 202
14th Granite
Well, I struck gold today.  And Zefon made me the administrator of the fortress.  From what I understand, this is the third time she's done this.  Last year Monom was an administrator, and the year before it was Evilcheerio.  Now it's me.  ...Great, just what I need.  Now not only do I need to keep these inexperienced clumsy miners in line, but now I have to handle the whole fortress.

17th Granite
We've been digging out the gold vein, but it's slow going.  Half of the miners have been at Obok's party for the past four days.  I had to drag a bunch of those lazy dwarves out by their beards to haul goods to the depot when the elves came yesterday.   Those flighty tree-huggers came just a day after the dogs at the front entrance chased away three kobold thieves.  I think the elves and kobolds are in cahoots.

That damn party is still going on, and they didn't even stop the music when Obok dropped on the floor and popped out a kid.  It's a baby girl, and her and Kosoth named her Tun.  Nice name, but I wonder if being born at a party will have any consequences.  She's cute, though.  Has her father's beard.

20th Granite
No animals from the elves this time, just a bunch of wood and cloth.  I really don't get these guys.  I mean, they yell at us when we cut down trees, but here they come with loads full of wood.  What, did the trees just barf up the wood for them to use?  Hypocritical bastards.  I gave them an armful of Mebzuth's trinkets for all the cloth and wood they had.  She's really spitting them out now.

I'm starting to rearrange some of the things here.  Evil and Monom really made a mess of the place.  Not organized at all.  I mean, they have the butcher and the loom right next to each other.  I'm surprised we're not spitting out bloody cloth all day.  First thing is to designate an area for ore- and metal-related crafts.  I've got the mining team expanding the main level to the south.

18th Slate
A few couple days ago we had our first immigration of the year.  Fifteen new mouths to feed, including two gem cutters and a glassmaker.  I suppose one gem cutter isn't that bad.  Ineth's better at setting them than cutting them, but two gem cutters are a bit overkill.  And a glassmaker?  Did these guys look at a map before they headed out over here?  We got no sand, and we got no glass.

A bunch of peasants came in with the immigration wave, and I sent them all to Melbil to train up as recruits.  Not that Melbil's very experienced herself, but we need some sort of military.  Those kobolds before gave me the creeps.

The elves finally decided to pick up their trinkets and leave yesterday.   On their way out I could've sworn one of them said something about the new dwarves making the place smell worse.  Good riddance.   Pansy kobold-lovers...

Today we found some onyx and tourmalines while mining out where I want to put the ore stockpile.  That ought to give the new gem cutters something to keep them busy for a while.  The rest of the immigrants, though...

28th Slate
Dodak was helping us clear out some of the stone from the new excavations when he dropped the rock he was carrying on Meng's foot and just took off.  I screamed at him to get back to work and followed him all the way to one of the crafter's workshops where he slammed the door in my face!  Bastard nearly cut my beard off.  Now he won't let anybody in that workshop.

...later...

Meng saw Dodak slip out of the workshop in the middle of the night and grab something from the bone stockpile, along with some rock and one of the gold nuggets we mined out yesterday.  He's locked the door again.  I hope he has something wonderful planned for that gold, otherwise I'm gonna hang him by his own beard.

7th Felsite
Dodak finally came out of the workshop today and he proudly presented me with... a damned ring.  He took eight days to make a damned ring?  And now he says he's a bonecarver.  I suppose that's more useful than animal dissection.  He calls the stupid ring Unolimesh, "Soulsprinkle."  I'll sprinkle his soul all over the fortress walls if he makes another useless ring.

18th Felsite
Mebzuth and her husband Obok had another child today.  They named her Zan.  What is it with monosyllabic baby names nowadays?

I noticed today that our booze supply was absolutely gone.  I brought it up to Evil and the damned Brewmaster had the gall to tell me he was on break.  I'll break him!  I yanked him out of the zoo by his beard and shoved him headfirst into the still and told him if we didn't have any ale by midnight that I'd brew his teeth.

21st Felsite
Spring is ending on a bad note.  Momuz the woodworker walked a little too close to the river today and was dragged down by a carp.  Little needle-toothed bastards!   I didn't dare send anyone over for his body.  We marked one of the coffins for him in the tomb anyway, poor soul.

I need to finish walling off that side of the fort so no one else is tempted to wander that close to the river.

Journal of Miner Ushat Keskarul - Summer of 202
10th Hematite
The human caravan arrived today.  They brought lots of useful goods with them.  We bought plenty of meat and a few weapons.  Some of the other dwarves have been complaining at the lack of variety in the food lately.  The cooks seem to have been making biscuits out of everything.  There were a few plump helmet roasts in the larders, but I think everyone is starting to get sick of mushrooms, no matter how the cook dresses them up.

One thing I never understood about the humans is why they always insist on bringing us armor and clothing sized for them.  What do they think we're going to do with it, make puppets?   In any case, I had Zefon buy every useful thing from them and loaded them up with crafts from Mebzuth.  They seemed very happy with the deal they got.

24th Hematite
Damn goblins!  We had two ambushes in the last few days.  I ordered everyone outside, but a few unlucky ones didn't make it.  I sent all of our wrestlers and recruits into the entry passage to push back the attackers if they make it past the cage traps.  The goblins keep tramping around outside the entrance, I can hear them up there, but they won't come down.  I think they know we're waiting for them.  I hope they leave soon.  We're going stir-crazy down here.

6th Malachite
The goblins have left, and all of the dwarves who were caught outside returned home!  They all managed to keep running the goblins on a merry chase, but were never able to return home until the ambushes broke off.  Their second wave of ambushers walked into the cage traps, and when five or six of them were caught the rest ran away like little bunnies.  Life is slowly returning to normal.

27th Malachite
We had another birth today.  Urvad and Shorast had a little girl and named her Udib.  I have a feeling the fortress is going to be crawling with little useless mouths soon.  Why can't people just keep their pants to themselves.

I had to remind Zefon three times about the human liaison.  She had been helping the engravers smooth out the walls and floors of the fortress, and seemed to be so engrossed in her work that she didn't see him standing behind her, tapping his foot.  I don't know why he didn't say anything to her.  I gave him a mining hammer and told him that next year he should hit her over the head with it if she doesn’t notice him.  He gave me a strange look, but kept the hammer.

2nd Galena
By Geshud's shiny green beard, Sazir walked!

Sazir the miner has been bedridden since the goblin ambush last Limestone.  He took a pretty hard blow to the head and hasn't been all that coherent the few times I've gone to see him.  He just mumbles on about random things like tea and fluffy wamblers.  But Goden told me that today he suddenly sat bold upright, a strange gleam in his eyes and headed for the mason's workshop without saying a word.  I came by just in time to see him carry in a bolt of cloth and lock the door.  Goden said he also grabbed some orthoclase, nickel, and leather.  We tried to ask him if he was okay though the door, but he didn't answer.  We heard a lot of hammering and chiseling, though.  I think he's making something.

8th Galena
Sazir was locked in that workshop for five days, and it sounded like he never stopped working the entire time.  Yesterday he opened the door, looking extremely tired.  Goden and I kept asking him what he was doing in there, and if he was feeling better, but he didn't say a word to either of us.  He just headed straight back to his bed, curled under the covers, and went right to sleep.

When we went back to the workshop we saw a great stone bed.  It was made of orthoclase, had a great canopy made of leather and rope reed, and was circled by a band of nickel.  At its base was carved the words "Factionbristles, the Dishonest Colors."  I don't know what to say.  Zefon took a look at it and said it was probably worth over 13,000 limuls.  Sazir has been sleeping ever since.

12th Galena
In honor of Sazir's inspired creation I ordered an engraving made in his bedroom.  Monom "Awayfarer" insisted on carving it.  It was a dwarf raising a chalk idol, and he called it "The Touchy Strangers."  I didn't really know what to say about it.  I told Monom it looked nice, but I'm wondering what strangers he's been touching.

OMG guys. look at this artifact my leatherworker made.
This is a longnose gar leather left mitten. All craftsdarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with sea lamprey leather, donkey leather and turtle shell and encircled with bands of longnose gar leather, Iron, Platinum and Green zircon. This object menaces with spikes of Birch. On the item is an image of a elf and a dwarf in iron. The dwarf is striking down on the elf.

So when i think of this, i imagine a glove with brass knuckles built in, and spikes on those knuckles. An it's the perfect weapon for punching an elves face in am i right?

Journal of Miner Ushat Keskarul - Autumn of 202
23rd Limestone
Haven't had much time to write this month.  Very busy in the fortress.  The dwarven caravan arrived earlier in the month and we traded them lots of stone trinkets and goblin leftovers for weapons, armor, metals, and other things we need.  Also earlier in the month I started a shrine to Geshud Savedgravel.  The little Rakust-worshipper Monom built a temple to Rakust last year, and it seemed sad that this fortress had a shrine to the god of suicide, but not to the god of fortresses.  I'm building Geshud's shrine in part of a mined-out vein of Limonite and planning on giving him a golden statue, using the gold we found at the beginning of the year.  We still haven't found the end of that vein, but we haven't been rushing.  There's been plenty more for the miners to do around the fortress, and we mined out more gold than we can use already.

20th Sandstone
I swear, that Zefon seems to do everything to get out of talking with the trading liaisons.  I had to pull her out of another party.  Evilcheerio keeps throwing them at the most inopportune moments.

5th Timber
We had another migrant wave yesterday.  Only nine this time.  We have enough dwarves now that it might be time to look into more security for the fortress.  I took all of the immigrant peasants and made them into the fortress guard and made one of them, Udil, the guard captain.  I should look into making a jail soon.  Udil says that's important for morale.  Dwarves are happier when they know people who piss them off get thrown in the dungeon.  At least, that's what Udil says.  What does he know, anyway?  I just made him fortress guard yesterday.

13th Timber
When the last migrant wave arrived Zefon decided that "fortress administrator" wasn't a good enough title.  She called ma aside and said that now that she was a "mayor" she would need some better things.  She wants a bigger bedroom, a dining room all to herself, and a few other "necessities" like an armor stand.  I've never seen her wear armor in her life.  I don't think she's even touched a suit of armor!

In any case, we've started digging out more bedrooms for Zefon and the new immigrants.  I put Sazir's stone bed in one of the rooms and told Zefon that'd be her new room.  She was ecstatic about that, but said I wasn't working fast enough on her dining room.  She says we need a hatch cover.  I asked her what a hatch cover had to do with a dining room, but she just told me to get to work.

That woman is starting to get on my nerves.

6th Moonstone
We made Zefon her hatch cover, and her dining room, and her coffers, and her armor stand.  I had the armor stand made out of gold, thinking it would make her happy.  She said it was nice, but that she still needed a weapon rack.  And two more hatch covers.  ARGH!

I told the metalworkers to get about building a golden weapon rack right away, and they told me they didn't have any gold bars.  Fine, I said, smelt some gold.  The smelters said they didn't have any coke.  Fine, make some coke out of lignite.  They didn't have any charcoal to smelt the lignite.  Finally I had to grab a wood burner by the beard and tell him to start making charcoal or I'd make him into charcoal.

I suppose I should've just made a stone weapon rack, but I'm hoping having a golden weapon rack to go with the golden armor stand would make Zefon forget about her Geshud-forsaken hatch covers.

Journal of Miner Ushat Keskarul - Winter of 202
18th Moonstone
Ambush!  Again!  The damned goblins jumped Ranger Sakzul and killed him before he had a chance to get off a shot.  A couple of the wrestlers saw it happen.  They knew they couldn't fight that many goblins themselves, so they  tried to lure them back to the entrance and the traps, but the gobbos didn't take the bait.  They're still up top.  We don't know what they're waiting for but it's making me nervous.

23rd Moonstone
After days hiding we think the goblins are finally gone.  Just today we caught four goblin snatchers, one after another, in the cage traps by the entrance.  The goblin soldiers followed them in and triggered the remaining traps, then decided they had lost too many and fled.  When we came back to the surface to survey the damage we found that all four dogs that had been chained at the gates were dead, and one of the cage traps in the "monkey trap" that Monom had set up had caught a goblin.  I guess the bastard wondered what was in there and walked too far in.  We tied up another dog to guard the entrance, but we're running short of war dogs.  We have plenty of puppies, but they're too young to be trained.  We'll have to wait until they're old enough to replenish our guard dogs.

22nd Opal
A week ago Goden the animal trainer was bringing Sazir some food when he suddenly gasped, dropped what he was carrying, and rushed to a craftsdwarf shop.  I'm getting sick of these dwarves suddenly getting the urge to build things.  Seven days later Goden emerged from the shop with a little statuette of a dog very messily killing a kobold, carved out of gneiss and decorated with praises, unicorn bones, silk, and shell.  I didn't have the heart to tell him it's gaudy as hell.  He told me it was called the Vegitation of Admirers.  I looked at him blankly when he said this, and he told me it was poetic and symbolized how people would be green with envy when they looked at it.  I thought they would be green with something else, seeing how the kobold's entrails were painstakingly modeled with strips of silk.  We stashed it in the stockpile with all of Mebzuth trinkets.  I suppose Goden's going to want to start making stone crafts now, too.

4th Obsidian
We finally dug out all of the gold vein yesterday, and today I had the last few cages placed for the jail.  I hope we don't need to use them for a long while.

Zefon told me I was doing a great job, but that she needed some items made out of fine pewter.  I asked her why, and she told me, "I'm mayor, that's why!  Just do it."  I swear... that woman...

28th Obsidian
Well, today is my last day as fortress administrator.  Frankly, good riddance.  I've had it up to here with Zefon, her fine pewter and her hatch covers.  I searched through the stockpiles for days, looking for fine pewter.  Zefon keeps those records herself, and I'm sure she wouldn't send us rushing to make fine pewter goods if she knew we had fine pewter, but there was none to be found.  We had trifle and lay pewter, but no fine pewter.  I considered melting down some of the copper and tin cages we had to make fine pewter, but I didn't think we'd have enough to make the number of pewter goods she wanted.

I'm leaving it up to my successor to explain to Zefon that no fine pewter equals no fine pewter goods.  Maybe he'll have better luck than I have.

Pictures and the fortress data coming soon!

Okay, here are pics of the fortress as it is now, at the end of year 203.

Main level:
Let's see, I added the two big "squares" at the bottom.  The southwest square is devoted to metalcrafting.  It has two smelters, a metalsmith's forge, and a wood furnace.  I was trying to move related shops closer together, and closer to related stockpiles.  The stockpile to the east of the metalcraft area is for ores.  I also forbade ores in the rest of the stone stockpiles I found.

You'll see a few caged goblins in the big mix stockpile.  I didn't have time to think up something to do with them.  RogueBookwyrm, you can have fun killing them. ;)

I also added a jail to the east of the archery range and started a finished goods stockpile right near the depot for quicker transportation of goods during trading.  Since there wasn't any other place for it and I didn't have time to make one I also allowed leather and cloth in this stockpile.  If somebody makes a leather or cloth stockpile elsewhere they may want to disable leather and cloth from the finished goods pile.

Oh, and there's also the shrine to Geshud north of the dining room in an old ore vein.  I thought it would be fitting if this area wasn't polished because Geshud is the god of minerals (among other things).

Sleeping level:
This is one level down from the main level.  I call it the sleeping level because it's mostly beds now.  I think all the dwarves have beds except a pair of babies.  I was working on the captain of the guard's quarters to the east.

I moved some of the workshops that were on this level and added an area devoted to woodworking.  I suppose it doesn't need to be that big, considering I usually have the stockpile less than 1/3rd full.

Mining excavation:
I found a shaft somebody before me dug that already went pretty deep, picked some random level and started exploratory mining.  This is where I found the gold.  Not sure exactly how far down this is, but I hot-keyed it (F3)  There's some cobaltite and orthoclase down here if you want to mine it out for colored stone.  Nothing else of use that I haven't already mined out.

Entrance level:
Here's the little entrance tunnel.  Haven't changed much here besides to add some cage traps and a weapon trap.  I think one of the dogs died in an ambush and I haven't had a chance to put the doggie back.

Surface level:
I built some more on Awayfarer's wall up here, but didn't change much else.

Surface -1 level:
And lastly, here's one level up from the surface.  Didn't change much here either besides to shorten Away's road so that I could build the wall where I wanted.

And finally, the save can be found here for Roguebookwyrm.  I hope I did it right!  Let me know if it's wrong and I'll upload the right thing.

By the way, just so the next person knows, the walls aren't complete.  I'm sure there are a few places where enemies can still walk over.  Just don't want somebody assuming they're safe when they're not.

The entrance hall is 1 level down from the surface, the main level is one level below that, then the "sleeping level" is one level below that.
