Any game that is a legitimate threat to WoW is easy to spot

Simply look at the Release dates for WoW expansions.

Any MMO that is released at around (or exactly) the same time as a WoW expansion is a reasonable threat.

At least that I've been told.

So, I've been playing it for a day or two.

I must say, there are some things in it I find stupid. Sector travel is one of them (will explain more if you ask). But there are also some things I find to be rather fun, such as taking your bridge officers and security officers with you. Open instances are also good, except when you end up with an idle team mate, which sucks.

There are also some very amusing bugs due to the servers being overloaded at the moment.

I've also had 3 people ask me about the game on steam, so if I were to describe it... It'd say it's Pirates! on space. That's pretty much it. So it can be quite fun.

Bugs are great:

Is that a miniaturized starship? Cool! Maybe we can have Planet Democratus thanks to another bug.

Sector space is basicly where you warp too to travel to system or whatever. its shitty small and looks stupid.

did i mention that the ship feels more like a RC ship then a real ship?

Sector space if horrible indeed. I'd rather be in the bridge of my ship waiting for the warp to finish while hanging out with the officers (and friends/fleet) than traveling in that non-sense map.

I think the ship feels more like you know... a galleon... In the sea... Sluggish, catching wind, staying sideways to fire your cannons.

...less than two hours, huh?

Yeah.

People on the STO forums are describing it as being like flying a low quality paper airplane. Apparently there's no way to adjust pitch in more than 45 degrees in either direction. So if somebody is above you, you have to go through a long convoluted corkscrew motion to aim at them instead of simply turning upwards.

It's beta. It's lagging horribly for everyone.

Also. Click options after you put your password in the launcher, there's an option to use an EU proxy which should reduce your lag.

I'm really enjoying reading the forums. Pages and pages of people in the beta test complaining about how massively bad the game is. Lousy controls, simplistic gameplay, no free roaming...you can only go places you have missions for, lack of immersion, no in-game economy, lag, dated graphics, leftover menu button graphics from the previous game they borrowed the engine from...

Some people are even theorizing that the game is intended to be released for a console, and that the console and PC players will both play together in the same universe, so everything has to be sufficiently simple that it can be played with a single gaming controller.

Hey Head...is that offer for your beta account still open? The degree of fail I'm hearing about may deserve to be experienced firsthand for the sake of posterity.

Sounds exactly like the Champions Online release fiasco. We all just began to assume that the PC version was for beta testing while they got the console version ready (I actually played the whole game with my 360 controller). I got suckered into subbing for that game only to see it all fall apart on launch day when they changed the gameplay with a stealth mega-nerf.

Sad thing is both games are fun, but not $15 a month fun when they are more or less glorified single player games.

*edit*

If I sound bitter it's probably because I am and just want people to know what type of company and game they are dealing with.

...funny you should mention that. Champions Online is the game that beta testers are reporting that they're finding leftover graphics from in STO. Some people re claiming the game play is very similar too...except that it's in space sometimes.
